Nigeria Premier Football League sides Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have been relegated from the top flight following defeats in their Matchday 37 fixtures.
Bayelsa United’s four-year stay in the NPFL came to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Remo Stars in Ikenne on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The visitors made a bright start, taking the lead in the fifth minute through Ofem Nneoyi, who capitalised on a defensive lapse before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper.
Remo Stars responded strongly and drew level just before halftime when Alex Oyowah headed home from a well-delivered free kick. The hosts completed the comeback in the 64th minute as experienced striker Victor Mbaoma swept home his 13th league goal of the season.
The result leaves Bayelsa United on 40 points, six points behind safety with only one match remaining, confirming their relegation to the Nigeria National League.
Wikki Tourists also suffered relegation after a dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Rivers United. The Bauchi-based side had taken the lead early in the second half through Imanu Bala, but Rivers United staged a late comeback, scoring twice in the closing stages to secure victory and condemn Wikki Tourists to relegation after just one season in the top division.
The win kept Rivers United firmly in the title race. Managed by George Finidi, the Port Harcourt side remain one point behind league leaders Enugu Rangers, who recorded a 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance at the Cathedral Stadium.
With one round of fixtures left to play, the NPFL title race is set for a thrilling final-day showdown.
At the bottom of the table, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists remain on 40 points, while clubs including Abia Warriors, Kwara United, Enyimba FC, Warri Wolves, Remo Stars, Kun Khalifat and Niger Tornadoes have moved clear of the relegation zone.
