Bonmati beat out fellow Spain international Mariona Caldentey to claim the honor, continuing a remarkable run that underscores her dominance in the women’s game. England’s Alessia Russo, a standout in her country’s victorious UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign, finished third in the voting.

Despite a challenging year in terms of team results, Spain lost the Euro 2025 final to England in a dramatic penalty shootout, and Barcelona were defeated in the Women’s Champions League final by Caldentey’s Arsenal—Bonmati was named Player of the Tournament at the Euros. Her standout performances came even after missing Spain’s opening two matches while recovering from viral meningitis.

The Ballon d’Or is considered the highest individual accolade in football. Bonmati’s latest win follows back-to-back triumphs in 2023 and 2024, and continues the run of dominance by Spanish players, succeeding her Barcelona and national team teammate Alexia Putellas, who won the award in 2021 and 2022.

Since the Women’s Ballon d’Or was established in 2018, only Ada Hegerberg, Norway, and Megan Rapinoe, USA, have also lifted the trophy.
