President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger on the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th title of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
He also announced a donation of $100,000 and a three-bedroom apartment to each of the players.
Tinubu disclosed this when he hosted the players and other members of the team at the Presidential Villa on Monday.
“I have received this trophy on behalf of all Nigerians, and I say to you: thank you for the dedication, passion, and for reminding us of the strength of the Nigerian spirit. On behalf of a grateful nation, I hereby confer on the players and the 11-man technical team the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON),” he said.
The President expressed the pride felt by Nigerians in the Super Falcons’ remarkable journey throughout the competition, emphasizing that their victory is a triumph of courage, discipline, and consistency.
He acknowledged their role in promoting unity within the country through their outstanding performance and pledged to continue investing in sports and youth development.
The team captain, Rashidat Ajibade, dedicated the trophy to every Nigerian who believed in them from the group stage to the final match of the tournament.
She noted that their victory is a testament to the resilience of Nigerians when faced with challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ajibade stated that they will not rest on their laurels and are determined to continue striving until they become world champions.
