Yamal, 18 years old, is among the 30 players shortlisted for football’s most prestigious individual prize, where he will compete with several big names including his fellow Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.
Speaking to newsmen, Kounde said Yamal has earned his place among the favourites.
“Lamine Yamal for the Ballon d’Or? You’re putting me in a tricky situation, but I think he deserves it,” Kounde admitted. “I have a very good relationship with him. He is a team player he works a lot for the team. I understand him perfectly.”
Yamal enjoyed a breakthrough season with Barcelona, scoring 18 goals for the LaLiga champions and impressing with standout performances in the UEFA Champions League.
The Spanish forward, promoted to Barca’s senior squad by former coach Xavi, has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young talents and is now being tipped to claim football’s highest individual honour.
