This development comes after a video surfaced on social media, allegedly showing officers from the Kwara State Police Command engaging in extortion activities along the busy Osi-Eruku road, located in Ekiti Local Government Area.
The video went viral and depicts officers stopping motorists and demanding money for passage, with some drivers reportedly facing threats of intimidation, seizure of vehicle keys, and delays if they failed to comply.
The officers were said to have been using an Armoured Personnel Carrier, APC, typically assigned for anti-banditry patrols in the area.
According to a statement released by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police acknowledged the video’s circulation and confirmed that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
The statement also emphasized that any officers found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. If the officers involved have been identified and found guilty, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. The Command remains committed to upholding professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all its operations,” Ejire-Adeyemi said.

Local residents and commuters who regularly use the Osi-Eruku highway have expressed outrage over the actions of the officers. Many confirmed that police officers had set up multiple informal checkpoints, stopping vehicles and demanding money from drivers before allowing them to proceed.
Local traders and regular commuters have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the situation, saying that they now feel more vulnerable to exploitation rather than protected by the very police force tasked with ensuring their safety.
This investigation highlights ongoing concerns about police misconduct in parts of Nigeria, with many calling for reforms to ensure that officers prioritize their core duties and serve the public with integrity.
