Obaji undertook the journey in solidarity with the governor’s peace initiatives in the Effium/Ezza-Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, which had been ravaged by violent conflict.
He arrived in Abakaliki to a rousing welcome by hundreds of supporters before being received by the governor’s Chief of Staff, Emmanuel Echiegu. Governor Nwifuru commended Obaji’s courage and determination, presenting him with the cash gift in recognition of his effort.
Obaji said he embarked on the 17-day journey to express gratitude to the governor for his role in restoring peace to his community, which had experienced widespread destruction and loss of life.
“My community was in a serious crisis. Many lives were lost, and properties were destroyed. I trekked to Abakaliki to thank Governor Nwifuru for restoring peace,” he said.
According to Obaji, he began the journey with only two T-shirts and a pair of shoes, trekking during the day and resting in villages along the route at night.

His media aide, Wisdom Nwedene, also praised the governor for stabilising the once-troubled area and thanked those who offered support throughout the journey.
“The large turnout welcoming Jeremiah Obaji demonstrates how much Ebonyians value peace and the governor’s leadership,” Nwedene said. “To all Ebonyians who supported him, your solidarity and love show the value of peace in our communities.”
