The training, currently ongoing in the Ibadan/Ibarapa zone at Ido, is part of a broader initiative targeted at enhancing agricultural productivity and addressing the shortage of skilled tractor operators. Similar programmes are being held simultaneously in the Oke-Ogun and Oyo-Ogbomoso zones.
According to the state’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the programme is designed to equip young participants with practical skills in safe and efficient tractor operation, helping to replace the ageing workforce in the sector.
Participants are being provided with safety gear, including overalls, gloves, boots, and helmets, to ensure high training standards. Outstanding trainees will be offered apprenticeship placements with members of the Tractor Owners Association and established tractor-hiring firms.

Three participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity. Hammed Oladapo noted the scarcity of tractor drivers in the state, saying the training would help him secure employment. Idowu Babatunde described it as a chance to fulfil his long-standing interest in tractor driving, while Muyiwa Ibikunle said it aligned with his plans to pursue mechanised farming.
In a related development, the government recently designated 3,000 hectares at the Ijaiye Farm Settlement for a Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone and a wholesale food market, modeled after France’s Rungis market. The project is expected to improve value for farmers and drive economic growth in the agricultural sector.
