The 19-year-old collapsed while practicing with the UP Fighting Maroons at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman. Despite immediate first aid and being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was later pronounced dead.
Confirming the tragic incident in a statement published by Spin.ph, Bo Perasol, Director of the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development, described the passing as a devastating loss.
“UP is heartbroken to confirm that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he passed away,” Perasol said.
Although he was set to sit out a one-year residency period before becoming eligible for the UAAP Season 89, expectations were high for him to make an impact in future campaigns.
Medical authorities are still examining the exact cause of his death.
Perasol noted that the school is offering full support to Friday’s family during this difficult time.
Friday, who would have turned 20 on September 6, was hailed for his height, athleticism, and skill set, which made him a highly valuable addition to the UP roster. His passing has left teammates, coaches, and the wider basketball community in shock.
