In Jamaica, officials confirmed 19 deaths, mostly in the western parishes of Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth. In Haiti, at least 30 people were killed, 20 were injured, and another 20 are missing. More than 1,000 homes were flooded, and around 16,000 people are now in shelters.

Cuba also suffered heavy destruction, with homes collapsed, power lines down, and streets under water. About 735,000 people were evacuated from the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, and Guantanamo.

On Bermuda, strong winds and rain hit the island as it prepared for the storm’s arrival. Officials warned residents to stay safe as Hurricane Melissa continued its path through the region.

Scientists say climate change made the storm about four times more likely to happen.
