Speaking at the State House in Abuja after swearing in the new INEC boss, Tinubu said Amupitan’s appointment showed the trust and confidence both the executive and legislature have in his ability and character.
He urged the new chairman to protect the credibility of the electoral process and strengthen the institution’s capacity as he prepares for his first major task, the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s democracy, which has grown since 1999, has benefited from reforms and lessons learned over the years. He stressed that maintaining transparency at every stage, from registration to result collation, was key to preserving public confidence in the system.
“Our democracy has come a long way,” the President said. “To ensure that it continues to thrive, our electoral process must remain credible and beyond reproach.”
He encouraged Amupitan to focus on transparency, inclusiveness, and non-violence in future elections.
After taking the oath of office, Professor Amupitan pledged to defend the Constitution and work with all stakeholders to ensure free and fair elections.
