He disclosed this while revealing that he was once paid with tubers of yam and a live chicken for a church performance a gesture he described as unfair and discouraging for gospel artists in Nigeria.

According to the gospel artist in a viral video he posted on his social media page, Godfrey expressed deep frustration over how gospel musicians are treated, especially within local church circles. His remarks have since ignited widespread conversations about the ethics of charging for gospel performances and the sustainability of full-time ministry in the modern church.

“I don’t like coming to Nigeria, “It became difficult because of how artists are being treated so badly,” he stated.

He went on to criticise the culture of guilt-shaming gospel singers who charge for performances, arguing that such attitudes ignore the financial realities musicians face.

“Why are people wicked? What sense does it make that people work so hard, and you are saying they should take, I have collected tubers of yam as honorarium. I have collected a full, alive, working, breathing chicken,” he said.

Visibly emotional, Godfrey questioned how artists were expected to meet financial obligations with such non-monetary “payments.”

“And that is what I’m going to use to pay school fees, pay house rent, and buy property? No. That is absolutely unfair.”
