Speaking at a leadership conference in Abuja, Sanusi said the habit of flattering leaders has weakened governance and accountability. He noted that many officials only say what leaders want to hear, while those who tell the truth are often treated as enemies.
“Our leaders have too many sycophants. People who speak the truth are seen as enemies of the state,” he said. “You disgrace yourself and your office when you turn into a praise singer.”
Sanusi commended the government for removing fuel subsidy and unifying exchange rates but warned that these reforms would fail without discipline in public spending. He urged the government to reduce waste, cut the size of its cabinet, and show real examples of sacrifice.

“Why do we need so many ministers and long convoys when the people are told to endure hardship?” he asked.
Economist Atedo Peterside also urged the government to ensure that savings from subsidy removal are used transparently to help ordinary Nigerians.
Both leaders stressed that Nigeria can only move forward if truth, integrity, and accountability return to public service.
