The National Banana and Plantain Growers, Processers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, Osun Chapter has called on the State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke to support agriculture by providing farmland for farmers and Agro-based inputs, as the state is an Agrarian State.

The Association made this call through its Chairman, Samuel Obisanya, while speaking with one of our correspondents, noted that Osun State is naturally blessed with Plantain but appealed to the state government to support them to ensure adequate production, amidst the commencement of the rainy season.

Obisanya hinted that the Osun State Government’s distribution of Tractors to Federal Constituencies across the state will be difficult to access for farmers.

According to him, the Tractors should be left in the care of respective associations as they are they are closer to each farmer, unlike constituency Offices, adding that Banana needs more than Tractors.

In the same vein, the Secretary of the Association, Olalekan Odunuga, maintained that each farmers needs varies across what the farmer produces, stressing that Plantain farming also needs Suckers and Agro-Chemical inputs.

He also frowned at locating the Tractors in constituencies, adding that there are some constituencies without Plantain Farmers.

While speaking on encouraging younger generations into farming, Olalekan stressed that the Association has commenced the “Catch Them Young” program, which is aimed at enlightening secondary school students on the importance of Agriculture.
