According to a statement issued by Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, stated that the arrests followed a routine military exercise and that preliminary investigations revealed the officers’ misconduct was largely driven by frustrations over failed promotion exams and stalled career progression.
“Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues,” the statement said.
Gusau noted that some of the officers were already under investigation for various offences and were either facing trial or awaiting court proceedings. He stressed that their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards expected within the military.
“Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” he added.

The military emphasized that the arrests are part of routine internal measures aimed at maintaining order and discipline within the ranks, and not politically motivated.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” the statement concluded.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterated its commitment to professionalism and its constitutional duties.
