Chavez Jr., 39, was deported from the United States on Monday and appeared before a federal judge in Sonora State. His lawyer, Ruben Fernando Benitez, confirmed that the judge ordered his immediate release under strict conditions, including a travel ban.
The former world champion is accused of involvement in organized crime, though not in a leadership role, and of allegedly aiding the illegal smuggling of weapons into Mexico.
According to Benitez, the Attorney General’s Office requested an additional three months to gather evidence, with the next hearing scheduled for November 24.
Chavez was arrested by U.S. authorities for illegal entry and was later linked to Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa Cartel, one of several drug trafficking organizations classified as terrorist groups by Washington. He was transferred to a prison in Hermosillo following his deportation.
