The 21-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in June for £30 million, had featured in all three of the club’s Premier League matches this season. However, he was forced off early during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham on August 30, and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“Liam, I think it’s around 10 to 12 weeks, so a long way to go,” Maresca told reporters during a press conference.
Delap’s injury leaves Chelsea light in the striker department, especially following the departure of Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day. In response, the Blues have recalled 18-year-old Marc Guiu from his loan spell at Sunderland to provide cover.
“At the moment, the only true No. 9 we have is Guiu,” Maresca said. “João can play there as well. Against Fulham, we used Tyrique as a nine, so he’s also a possibility.”
Maresca also provided an update on new signing Alejandro Garnacho, who arrived from Manchester United this summer.
