Harry Kane heads back to north London set to face his former rivals Arsenal in what promises to be a highly anticipated Champions League clash.
The Bayern Munich striker is arguably in the best form of his career, and his evolution into a deeper, more versatile role has been a key factor in his outstanding performances this season.
Known for his consistent goal-scoring, the England captain has grown into a more well-rounded player since joining Bayern, taking on additional creative and defensive responsibilities. At 32, Kane’s influence on the pitch is undeniable, with his form helping drive Bayern’s impressive start to the campaign. The German giants have won 17 and drawn one of their 18 matches across all competitions, with Kane playing a starring role in every game.
Having scored 15 goals in 21 appearances against Arsenal, Kane will be crucial to Bayern’s hopes of breaching the Gunners’ stingy defense. Mikel Arteta’s side has been rock-solid in Europe, the only team yet to concede in the Champions League this season, while they’ve shipped just six goals in the Premier League—the best defensive record in Europe’s top five leagues.
Kane’s numbers this season are exceptional, with 24 goals in 18 appearances for Bayern and five in five matches for England. But his contributions go beyond just finding the back of the net. Kane has become more than just a striker, often dropping deeper to play as a creative force in midfield. Under the guidance of Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany, Kane has thrived in this new role, sitting behind attackers like Nicolas Jackson or Serge Gnabry.
“I know I’m not just a goal-scorer,” Kane said. “I can impact the team with passing, one-on-one situations, and taking the pressure off the team. This is the most I’ve enjoyed my football because I’m just involved more. I love the way we play a really aggressive style, no fear. I love tackling, I love helping the team out and blocking shots and all that part of it as well. Obviously, I’m going to be judged on goals, but I think, especially this season, people will appreciate some of the other stuff I do as well.”
Kane will likely need to step up in the scoring department, particularly with Luis Diaz suspended for three Champions League matches following a red card against PSG. Diaz had netted both of Bayern’s goals in their 2-1 win over the French giants, so Kane’s leadership in attack will be crucial.

For Kane, this return to Arsenal carries added significance. Having come through Tottenham’s ranks after being released by Arsenal as a child, Kane has a personal connection to the north London rivalry. Reflecting on his time at Arsenal’s youth system, Kane said, “I was there for a couple of years and got released. It’s all part and parcel of the journey of football. That was 20 years ago, a long time ago. We’ve moved on a long way since then.”
While Bayern are flying high, they have shown some vulnerabilities in recent matches, particularly at set-pieces an area where Arsenal excels. The German side has conceded four goals from dead-ball situations in their last two games, a weakness that has not gone unnoticed by their coach.
“We have an issue with set-pieces, and you can’t hide it,” Kompany admitted. “Everyone saw it. Arsenal’s analysts will see it too. We have to show personality, character, and defend those situations better. But I have confidence in our side.”
As the two teams prepare to meet, Kane will be looking to prove that his new role at Bayern is more than just a temporary shift—and that his all-around game can make the difference in a tightly contested battle.
