Since taking the reins in March 2025,the coach has revitalized Nigeria’s national football team with a string of impressive results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers.
Under Chelle’s leadership, the Super Eagles have secured four wins and two draws from six matches, amassing 14 points from a possible 18. Prior to his appointment, Nigeria had only managed two points from their first two games.
In an exclusive interview with reporters, Chelle revealed that his journey with Nigeria is personal. The former Mali coach, who led his home country to the quarter-finals at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, said his connection with the Super Eagles transcends football.
“As I often say, it’s my DNA,” Chelle shared. “Coming to coach in Africa, it’s more than just sport. It’s a message about unity. Football can bring people together regardless of origin or religion. It’s about respect for the individual.”
Although his appointment as a Malian in charge of Nigeria initially raised eyebrows, Chelle emphasized that he’s focused on doing his job with humility and respect. “I arrived as someone who is 50% Malian, 50% French. But today, I consider myself Nigerian. I’m ready to give everything for this team and this country.

Under Chelle’s guidance, the Super Eagles have shown a renewed intensity and tactical balance. His people-first approach emphasizes mental strength, unity, and resilience qualities that have fueled Nigeria’s resurgence on the pitch.
Chelle’s strategy is built on collective strength. “If we arrive after success in the play-offs, it will be hard to stop us,” he said. “But we know there are strong teams like Morocco, Tunisia, and Côte d’Ivoire. Our strength is that the players have faced challenges, but they’ve found ways to overcome them. That resilience will hurt opponents.”
