The Nigerian striker made the announcement via an Instagram post, revealing that he is stepping away from the game with immediate effect.
Ujah, who spent the majority of his career in Germany, had been without a club since his contract with Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv expired in July. His stint at the club was marred by injury, as he missed 40 matches due to a persistent knee issue. He managed just five appearances, scoring twice before calling time on his career.
“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football,” Ujah wrote. “I also want to thank every club I have played for, every coach who believed in me, and every teammate who fought beside me on the pitch. Together, we’ve shared victories that will forever warm my heart and defeats that taught me resilience.
“Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country is one I will forever live to cherish. Football has been more than a game for me; it has been my passion, my identity, my home. I will truly miss the emotions, the atmosphere, the dressing room laughter, the celebrations, and even the hard days that made the good ones sweeter.
“A new chapter begins, but my love for football will never end.”
Ujah is fondly remembered at German club FC Köln, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014. His contributions included vital goals and a memorable celebration with the club’s live goat mascot, which endeared him to fans.
Over a 15-year career, Ujah scored 113 goals across all competitions. Internationally, he earned seven caps for Nigeria’s Super Eagles but did not find the back of the net.
Ujah’s retirement marks the end of a career defined by grit, passion, and perseverance qualities that made him a respected figure both at club and international levels.
