The incident occurred at the Alapoka axis of the road. According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, the truck reportedly suffered brake failure before ramming into an unregistered tricycle carrying the victims.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the fatalities, stating that all five passengers in the tricycle died on the spot. The truck, bearing the number plate GRZ 767 XA, failed to stop in time and fatally crushed the smaller vehicle.

“According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver didn’t realize he had collided with the tricycle until his vehicle ran over it and its occupants,” Akinbiyi said.

Following the incident, the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, alongside the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue operation to the scene. Tensions quickly escalated, with angry residents attempting to attack the responders. The situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of security operatives, including members of the Amotekun Corps.

The remains of the victims have since been evacuated to a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.
