As Cross River State prepares to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its iconic Carnival Calabar, the state government is positioning this year’s festival as a major step towards restoring the region’s status as West Africa’s top tourism destination.
Governor Bassey Otu made the announcement during the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Millennium Park, where he was joined by four former governors,Clement Ebiri, Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke, and Ben Ayade in a symbolic gesture of unity to support the state’s tourism revival. The governor’s comments were later confirmed in a statement.
The Governor emphasized that tourism is a key pillar of his administration’s economic agenda. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to revitalizing the sector through initiatives aimed at human capital development, rural transformation, and boosting Cross River’s global visibility.
“My team and I are dedicated to advancing Cross River through human capital development, industrialization, rural transformation, and tourism,” Governor Otu said.

The Carnival Calabar has become a world-renowned event over the past two decades. Cultural experts, such as Joseph Nneji, a prominent culture and entertainment consultant, believe that the 2025 edition offers more than just celebration—it’s an opportunity for economic repositioning.
Nneji, who has been involved in the festival’s preparations, stated, “Preparations are underway to ensure this year’s Carnival sets new global standards. The 20th anniversary isn’t just a celebration for Cross River, it’s a milestone for Africa and the world. We invite governments, tourists, creatives, brands, and cultural institutions to join us in commemorating two decades of excellence.”
Originally conceived as a small-scale tourism initiative, the Carnival Calabar has grown into a global spectacle, attracting millions of participants both on-site and virtually. The event now has a worldwide reach, drawing visitors from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, South Africa, Ghana, and beyond.
The 20th anniversary of Carnival Calabar is set to be a transformative moment for the state, not only as a cultural celebration but also as a key driver for regional economic growth and global recognition.
