The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the Osun State governorship election and the 2027 general elections.

INEC disclosed this in a statement signed by the National Commissioner, Chairman, Information, and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, noting that the governorship election in Osun State will now hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026, instead of August 8, 2026. The commission explained that the change was made to adjust the election timetable and ensure proper preparations.

INEC also moved the dates for the 2027 general elections forward.

According to the new schedule, Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, overnorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

The elections were earlier planned for February and March 2027, but have now been brought forward by several weeks.

According to INEC, the revised dates are consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2026.

The Commission calls on all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring peaceful, credible and inclusive elections that reflect the sovereign will of the Nigerian people.
