Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the new Catholic Pope.

Prevost, who is the first American pope, will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

The new Pope has now replaced the late Pope Francis who died last month at the age of 88.

Pope Leo, in a short address after his presentation, blessed the crowd who had awaited his appearance at the St Peter’s Square, asking God to bless all faithful.

It was earlier reported that White smoke had flowed from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, signalling the election of a new Pope.
