The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Akwa Ibom has given starter packs to five inmates to help them rebuild their lives after leaving custody.

The command’s spokesperson, Richard Metong, said the items were presented at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Uyo.

Controller of the command, Frank Okonkwo, said the gesture supports the NCoS mandate on rehabilitation. He explained that empowering inmates reduces repeat crimes and promotes public safety.

According to him, trained and equipped inmates return to society as skilled and productive citizens.

The empowerment programme was carried out with support from partners and is part of ongoing efforts to improve vocational training in the command.

The inmates were trained in hairdressing, tailoring and barbing, and each received tools needed to start work immediately.

Metong said two of the five beneficiaries have already been released, while the remaining three will leave custody between now and 2026.
