The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, had reportedly proposed a salary review for the President, Vice President, governors, and other top officials. But the ADC described the move as “tone-deaf” and insensitive to the economic realities facing citizens.
In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the proposal shows government’s disconnect from the hardships Nigerians endure daily.
“We are aware of the Commission’s constitutional mandate to review salaries of political office holders. But proposing such at a time when millions are struggling with high food prices, rising fuel costs, and inadequate minimum wage only shows a total disregard for the people,” Abdullahi stated.
The party argued that politicians already enjoy excessive allowances and benefits, which fund their luxury lifestyles far beyond the reach of average Nigerians.
Abdullahi stressed that instead of raising politicians’ pay, the government should focus on improving workers’ wages and welfare.
The statement further urged the government to prioritize raising the minimum wage to a living standard, ensuring timely payment of workers’ salaries, and expanding social welfare programs to support vulnerable Nigerians.
