On Wednesday, 14th May 2025, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Engr. David Ayodele Asalu, publicly asserted that President Bola Tinubu has increased Constituency project allocations to One Billion Naira (1,000,000,000) for Federal Constituencies and Two Billion Naira (2,000,000,000) for Senatorial Districts.
Varied reactions followed the revelation, prompting Redio Afinju to seek details of constituency projects and the allocated figures for each arm of the National Assembly. A Redio Afinju reporter contacted an Aide to the Senate President who spoke on the condition of anonymity, to verify the claims.
A Special Presidential Intervention commenced in 2025
According to our Source, President Bola Tinubu indeed introduced a special intervention targeted at improving infrastructure at the Federal Constituencies and Senatorial Districts. The intervention, according to him, was introduced to the 2025 Appropriation Act.
He said, “Asalu’s claims are not entirely correct. The cost allocations for Zonal Intervention Projects, which are the statutory constituency projects, have not changed. For Members of the House of Representatives, ZIP allocation is still about One Hundred and Fifteen Million, while the allocation is about Two Hundred and Thirty Million per Senator.
However, President Tinubu decided to accelerate Infrastructural Development in the nooks and crannies of the country, using Representatives of the people in the National Assembly. He therefore introduced a special Intervention that looks like Constituency Projects in reality, but differs completely from the ZIPs.”
Speaking further, he explained that under the special intervention, one billion Naira is allocated to each Federal Constituency, while two billion Naira is allocated to each Senatorial District. “However, the President has clearly stated that 70% of the allocated figures must be attached to infrastructural projects like the construction of schools and roads. The President is also insisting that only two Agencies of Government will handle the Special Intervention. Those are Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), and Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI).”
“I must mention however, that funding for the projects have not commenced, so we cannot say categorically that Members of the National Assembly have started taking anything home to their Constituencies under the scheme. Once funding begins, each Senator or Rep, will be able to render reports to their people”, he concluded.
Meanwhile, Redio Afinju has collated the 2024 Zonal Intervention Project figures for the three Senatorial Districts and nine Federal Constituencies in Osun State. Details are shown in the images below:
