Recall, the embattled leader issued the bungled declaration on December 3 that led to his impeachment and has left him facing arrest, imprisonment, or the death penalty.

Supporters and opponents of Yoon have since camped outside his presidential residence, while members of his security team have blocked attempted police raids in a dramatic stand-off.

Yoon has gone to ground but remained unrepentant as the crisis has rolled on. He issued a defiant message to his base days before an arrest warrant expires on January 6.

Yoon said in a statement passed around to protesters and confirmed by his lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, that the Republic of Korea is currently in danger due to internal and external forces threatening its sovereignty, and the activities of anti-state elements.

He added that he watched the hundreds-strong protest on Wednesday evening on a YouTube livestream and vowed to fight alongside them to the very end to protect this nation.

Yoon Kab-keun confirmed to newsmen that the impeached leader remained inside the presidential compound.

Opposition lawmakers were quick to condemn Yoon Suk Yeol’s defiant message as inflammatory, with Democratic Party spokesperson Jo Seoung-lae calling him delusional and accusing him of trying to incite clashes.

The suspended president’s legal team has filed for an injunction to block the warrant and described the arrest order on Wednesday as an unlawful and invalid act.

Han Duck-soo took over as acting president from President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was suspended following a parliamentary vote over his move to impose martial law on December 3.

But opposition Members of Parliament now want Han, who is also prime minister, removed from office too, arguing that he is refusing demands to complete Yoon’s impeachment process and to bring him to justice.

In the impeachment motion put before parliament, the opposition said Han is intentionally avoiding the special investigation to probe those involved in the insurrection and has clearly stated his intention to reject the appointments of three Constitutional Court judges.

The motion said such actions are in violation of a public official’s duty to uphold the law and serve the public.

South Korea will see its second impeachment of a head of state in less than two weeks, if the opposition succeeds in its bid, further destabilising its vibrant political scene.

It will also mark the first time South Korea has impeached an acting president.

The Finance Minister, Choi Sang-mok would step in as acting president in Han’s place.

Holding an emergency press conference with cabinet members, Choi pleaded against the opposition’s action, saying an impeachment motion against the acting authority is no different from an impeachment motion against the entire cabinet.

He added that their economy and people’s livelihoods, which are walking on thin ice in a national emergency, cannot bear the expansion of political uncertainty surrounding the acting authority.

South Korean authorities have banned more top officials from leaving the country, in the wake of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s bungled attempt to impose martial law.

Reports said a day after Yoon himself was hit with a travel ban, his party was forging a “resignation roadmap” that reportedly could see him step down in February or March before fresh elections.

Yoon suspended civilian rule a week ago and sent special forces and helicopters to parliament, before lawmakers forced him to rescind the decree in a country assumed to be a stable democracy.

It was learnt investigators are probing the president and a cabal of allies — many from the same school — for alleged insurrection over the sequence of extraordinary events.

According to sources, Commissioner general of the Korean National Police Agency Cho Ji-ho, and two other top police officials became the latest to be banned from foreign travel.

Already confined to South Korean territory are the former defence and interior ministers, martial law commander General Park An-su and defence counterintelligence commander Yeo In-hyung.

Kim Yong-hyun, the former defence minister, was detained on Sunday and late Monday prosecutors filed a formal arrest warrant against him.

Charges included engaging in critical duties during an insurrection and “abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights.

A Seoul court will hold a hearing later in the day to rule on whether to issue the warrant for Kim, the first court decision to be made related to the martial law chaos.

Kim issued contrite comments Tuesday saying that all responsibility for this situation lies solely with on him.

Kim apologised to the South Korean people and said that his subordinates were “merely following my orders and fulfilling their assigned duties”, in a statement made through his lawyers.
