Trump nominated the Florida’s former top lawyer following the withdrawal of Matt Gaetz.

He disclosed this in a statement last night.

Former Florida representative Matt Gaetz announced he is withdrawing as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Attorney General citing what he described as the distraction his nomination had caused following a swirl of allegations about paying underage women for sex.

US Federal investigators had traced a network of payments involving Gaetz and numerous associates.

They said that the investigation revealed alleged connections to drug-fuelled sex parties and payments to women, including one who was a minor at the time.

Mocking his Republican successor Trump, Obama highlighted his privileged background and financial failures.

Trump, who lost his reelection bid in 2020 to Joe Biden, defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, the candidate of the Democratic Party, to emerge as the President-elect.

Trump, alongside his Vice President-elect, JD Vance, will be sworn in on 20 January, 2025.

Harris, who was bidding to become the first female president, told supporters that she had spoken to Trump and congratulated him.

Trump was able to regain the White House after securing victories in the key swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, U.S. broadcasters projected earlier on Wednesday.

Also, Trump was leading both in the electoral college votes as well as the popular votes. While he had the majority of the electoral college votes in 2016, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party won a majority of the popular votes.

Harris who was endorsed by President Joe Biden became the Democratic Party nominee for the 5 November presidential election. Her candidacy was also ratified by the delegates of the party during its national convention.

Meanwhile,Trump’s victory marks a dramatic political comeback to the White House after he lost his re-election in 2020 to Biden.

News that the former president’s party had taken control of the Senate further boosted prospects for sweeping tax cuts, additional tariffs, and deregulation—seen as favourable for the greenback.

The dollar jumped by 1.5 per cent to 154.33 yen, its highest since July. It also rose by more than one per cent against the euro and by more than three per cent against the Mexican peso.

Bitcoin surged nearly $6,000, hitting a record $75,330.88, surpassing its previous peak of $73,797.98 in March.

Trump has pledged to make the United States the “Bitcoin and cryptocurrency capital of the world” and to appoint tech billionaire Elon Musk to lead a wide-ranging audit of governmental waste.

The election coincides with the central bank’s latest policy decision, expected on Thursday, amid speculation it will cut interest rates by 25 basis points, following a 50-point reduction in September.

The dollar’s surge against the yen lifted stocks more than three per cent in Tokyo at one point, thanks to gains in exporters, while markets in Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Taipei, Mumbai, and Bangkok also rose.

The Democratic vice president and the Republican former president frantically blitzed several swing states as they tried to win over the last holdouts with less than 36 hours left until polls open on Election Day on Tuesday.

Trump predicted a landslide, while Harris told a raucous rally in must-win Michigan that they have momentum.

The 2024 race is going down to the wire, with more key states effectively tied at this point than in any  comparable election. Over 77.6 million people have cast early votes, around half of the total ballots cast in 2020.

With the clock ticking, Harris, 60, spent the day in Michigan where she risks losing the critical support of a 200,000-strong Arab-American community that has denounced the US handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

Kamala Harris’s campaign has swung into action since she replaced Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, smashing fundraising records and wiping out the leads built up by Republican rival Donald Trump.

According to a US senator and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democratic rising star, is said to have been considered the favorite to join Harris as her vice-presidential pick, ahead of several other state governors.

It was reported  that Harris had narrowed one of the most consequential choices of her political career to Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and would likely make her decision public in a video announcement.

The 59-year-old and her newly minted deputy will hold a rally at Temple University in Philadelphia before hitting Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, Arizona on Friday and Nevada on Saturday.

She was also intending to hold events in battlegrounds North Carolina on Thursday and Georgia on Friday, but local media outlets reported that a tropical storm battering southeastern states had forced their postponement.

Recall, Biden bowed out following a disastrous debate performance against Trump in June.

A second Trump-Biden televised debate had been scheduled for September 10 on ABC television.

That was expected to remain in place, with Harris replacing Biden, but Trump’s spokesman Steven Cheung last week said it was inappropriate to schedule it before Harris was formally the Democratic nominee.
