TikTok has temporarily restricted access to its LIVE feature for users in Nigeria during late-night hours, as part of an ongoing safety investigation aimed at ensuring the platform remains secure and its community protected.

At midnight Nigerian time, TikTok sent an in-app notification to users, stating:
“LIVE⚫ Notices
TikTok LIVE Update in Nigeria,
We’re temporarily limiting LIVE late at night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected.”

According to reports, LIVE sessions that had been active earlier in the night were suddenly inaccessible between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., with affected accounts displaying a “No Access” message. During this time, creators were also unable to view LIVE broadcasts from other countries.

Only users with at least 1,000 followers the minimum required to host a LIVE session received the notification. Several creators confirmed that all LIVE activities were halted overnight. Despite the interruption, creators who earn revenue through LIVE gifting found that their balances and previous earnings remained intact, alleviating concerns of financial loss.

By Monday morning, LIVE access had been restored, but the disruption sparked discussions across social media, with users speculating about the cause of the sudden, nationwide restriction.

Night-time hours are typically peak times for Nigerian streamers, who host entertainment segments, live games, and interactive Q&As that attract a significant number of viewers and virtual gifts.

The move follows a recent update from TikTok, where the company shared safety statistics for the West African region. During the West Africa Safety Summit in Dakar, Senegal, TikTok revealed that between April and June 2025, it took action against over 2.3 million LIVE sessions and 1.04 million LIVE creators globally for violating its LIVE Monetisation Guidelines. In Nigeria, 49,512 LIVE sessions were banned during the same period.

TikTok also reported removing more than 3.7 million videos in Nigeria during Q2 of 2025 for breaching Community Guidelines. Notably, 98.7% of these videos were removed before being viewed, and 91.9% were taken down within 24 hours.

TikTok LIVE is an in-app feature that allows users to broadcast in real time, creating opportunities for direct engagement with viewers through comments and virtual gifts. Unlike pre-recorded content, LIVE broadcasts offer a more interactive experience, where creators can host live Q&As, talent showcases, or just casual chats.

To use the feature, users must generally have at least 1,000 followers (sometimes fewer), be over 16 years old (18 to earn money), and maintain a clean account. Once eligible, they can start a live broadcast by selecting the ‘+’ button and choosing ‘LIVE,’ after which they can add a title and apply effects before starting the stream.

The fast-rising content creator, who brands his online platform as the “University of Wisdom and Understanding,” has gained attention for his unconventional advice to men on relationships and financial independence.

Reacting to the overwhelming support, Geh Geh shared a video expressing his surprise and gratitude.
“More than 177,000 people watch my lectures today. Jesus! University of wisdom and understanding, the only university where once you graduate, woman go fear to ask you for money,” he said.

The TikToker, who often describes himself as “the first illiterate to find a university in the history of Nigeria,” also reflected on his difficult background.
“I no be graduate too, but by the grace of God, I don find school. I be orphan, but now Nigerians don show me love,” he added.

Geh Geh’s story has been widely celebrated as an example of digital empowerment, showing how young people without formal education can use social media to create influence, inspire conversations, and earn a living.

Though his controversial takes on money and women continue to spark debate, many now see his journey as a source of hope for underprivileged youths seeking opportunities online.

An unidentified young man has caused tension in Kano state, as he climbed a tall billboard near Gadar Lado, along Zaria Road, and threatened to jump.

While speaking with newsmen, the state police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, hinted that the man said he would only come down if certain TikTok celebrities he follows appeared at the scene.

He added that security operatives are currently making efforts to rescue him alive

“He specifically mentioned that if the celebrities he follows on TikTok don’t come, he will jump. May Allah prevent it,” Kiyawa asserted.

According to the parents, the children, Isaac Kenevan, Archie Battersbee, Julian Sweeney and Maia Walsh, died while attempting the trend called the “blackout challenge”.

The US-based Social Media Victims Law Center filed the lawsuit on Thursday against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance on behalf of the children’s parents.

Meanwhile, searches for videos or hashtags related to the challenge on TikTok have been blocked since 2020.

TikTok has clarified that it prohibits dangerous content or challenges on the platform and directs those who search for hashtags or videos to its Safety Centre.

The complaint was filed in the Superior Court of the State of Delaware on behalf of Isaac’s mum Lisa Kenevan; Archie’s mother Hollie Dance; Jools’ mother Ellen Roome; and Maia’s dad Liam Walsh.

It claims the deaths were the foreseeable result of ByteDance’s engineered addiction-by-design and programming decisions, which were aimed at pushing children into maximizing their engagement with TikTok by any means necessary.

In a significant defeat for TikTok, the court ruled that the law does not violate free speech rights and that the US government had demonstrated legitimate national security concerns regarding a Chinese company owning the app.

Earlier the week, the Supreme Court heard arguments from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, arguing that the law should be blocked as it violated free speech.

With that decision, the ban set for Sunday will effectively stand, even as lawmakers and officials across the political spectrum called for some delay.

Last year, Congress passed a law compelling ByteDance to either sell the platform or close it in the US by January 19.

The law was a response to widespread belief in Washington that the popular app could be used by China for spying or propaganda.

White House officials had stated they would not enforce the ban, leaving the decision to President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office a day later.

Trump confirmed that he had discussed TikTok in a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping while Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday also called for a delay in the looming TikTok ban.

To enforce the ban, the US government would direct Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores, preventing new downloads starting the day before Trump takes office.

TikTok lawyer Noel Francisco stated that the site would “go dark” on Sunday if the justices failed to block the ban, with reports indicating that the company was planning to suspend service entirely in the US.

While campaigning ahead of the November election, Trump pledged to save TikTok, and his team has been considering ways to delay the ban or rescue the app.

Once Trump takes office, the responsibility for enforcing the law will fall to his attorney general, who could opt not to enforce it or stall its implementation, defying Congress’s support for the legislation.

TikTok has been lobbying intensively to block the law’s implementation, and CEO Shou Chew will attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday. TikTok did not respond to a request for comment
