Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has expressed confidence and optimism as he assumes a leadership role ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, saying the team is united and determined to make up for recent disappointments.

Ndidi, who was named the team’s captain days ago, said the Super Eagles are confident going into the AFCON.

“The expectation is really high. Everyone is talking about it, the mood in camp is very positive, and the boys are really excited,” the 28-year-old said in an interview with POOJA on Tuesday. “We are ready for the challenge.”

The former Leicester man, one of Nigeria’s most experienced players and a regular within the squad, described captaining the national team as a privilege that comes with added responsibility.

The Beşiktaş midfielder stressed that while his role has evolved, his commitment to the team remains unchanged.

“It’s really exciting,” he said. “It’s the same player, just with much improvement and more responsibility. Being captain of the Super Eagles is a privilege and an honour.”

”I’m ready to lead the team and give everything, with the help of the senior players, the coaching staff, and the managers.”

Nigeria head into the AFCON seeking redemption after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a setback that deeply affected both players and fans.

The Super Eagles captain admitted the disappointment still lingers within the squad, but believes the AFCON presents a chance to respond positively.

“Not qualifying for the World Cup was really sad for us as players and for Nigerians,” the midfielder said. “But this tournament is a big step for us to get something positive again.”

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, will be aiming to reassert themselves as one of Africa’s football powerhouses. The Super Eagles will play Tanzania in their Group C opener on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles forward, who scored twice in Thursday’s 4-1 victory over Gabon, acknowledged the pressure of representing both his country and his club, Galatasaray.

However, he stressed that maintaining composure and correcting mistakes is key to his success.

According to a video shared on Instagram by journalists, Osimhen discussed the mental resilience required for a professional striker. “Sometimes I score goals that no one expects, and sometimes I miss the ones people think are easy. But that doesn’t affect me. I always keep the right mindset,” he explained.

Despite missing two clear chances during the match, Osimhen made up for it by scoring in extra time. Reflecting on his approach to setbacks, he said, “After missing those chances, I told my teammates I would correct it. And I’m happy I did that when it mattered most in extra time.”

Osimhen also praised the strong team spirit, emphasizing the importance of collective support. “Kudos to my teammates who assisted in both my goals. The mentality of this team is amazing,” he said. “We all work together, and that’s what makes us stronger.”

The striker also expressed his gratitude toward fans, saying, “A big thank you to the Super Eagles supporters around the world. This victory is for them, for everyone who has stood by us.”

Osimhen acknowledged the challenges in the upcoming rounds but reassured fans that the team is fully committed. “The next round won’t be easy, but we’ll give everything to ensure we reach the final,” he vowed.

Osimhen’s brace helped Nigeria secure a 4-1 extra-time win over Gabon at Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco. After a goalless first half, Akor Adams gave Nigeria the lead, Gabon equalized late in regulation, and Osimhen, alongside Chidera Ejuke, sealed the win in extra time.

Onuachu was notably omitted from the 24-man roster announced by head coach José Peseiro on Saturday, despite his strong form in Turkey.

With eight goals in the Turkish Süper Lig this season, the forward recently clinched the October Player of the Month award, making his exclusion all the more surprising.

The decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given Nigeria’s limited striking options beyond Victor Osimhen, the standout forward currently leading the attack. Onuachu’s omission comes at a time when he has been one of Europe’s top-scoring Nigerians, leaving fans and pundits questioning the selection.

Despite the disappointment, Onuachu quickly demonstrated his worth. In Trabzonspor’s 1-1 draw with Alanyaspor on Saturday, he scored the only goal for his team. In the 15th minute, Onuachu latched onto a pass from Mustafa Eskihellac, deftly maneuvered around his defenders, and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to put Trabzonspor ahead.

Onuachu’s impressive display was a clear reminder of his goal-scoring abilities, but it wasn’t the only notable exclusion from Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming World Cup playoff clash against Gabon in Rabat on November 13. Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, currently on loan at Pisa from Inter Milan, was also left out despite solid performances in Serie B. Akinsanmiro, praised for his energy, creativity, and ball control, had been widely anticipated to earn a call-up.

After missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria is determined to secure their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to return to the tournament for the first time since 2018.

Victor Osimhen was the star of the show, netting a clinical hat-trick, while Frank Onyeka added a late fourth to seal the rout. It was a performance filled with intensity, confidence, and attacking flair hallmarks that had been missing in earlier matches.

However, despite the emphatic win, Nigeria’s qualification hopes took a hit elsewhere. South Africa’s 3–0 victory over Rwanda in Mbombela meant the Super Eagles finished second in Group C just one point behind the group winners narrowly missing out on automatic qualification.

Victor Osimhen reminded everyone why he’s one of the most feared forwards in world football. His hat-trick took his international tally to 29 goals in 44 appearances just eight shy of the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37.

Despite only featuring in four of Nigeria’s ten qualifiers due to injury, Osimhen still finished as the team’s top scorer with six goals. His absence in key matches, particularly both legs against South Africa, proved decisive in the tight group standings.

Nigeria’s path to the World Cup is now more complicated. With automatic qualification slipping through their fingers, the Super Eagles must now navigate the perilous playoff route. In a campaign defined by fine margins, the dropped points and missed chances earlier in the group stage loom large.

The team, who are preparing for their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday, touched down at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, at 8:05 am on Sunday, according to team media officer Promise Efoghe.

“Finally, Super Eagles arrive in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. The team touched down at 8.05 a.m. Sunday morning,” Efoghe confirmed in a statement issued to the media.

A video later released by the team’s media department showed players and officials disembarking from the ValueJet aircraft, signalling the end of a tense and delayed journey that had begun in Polokwane, South Africa.

The Super Eagles had departed Polokwane late on Saturday, shortly after their match preparations in South Africa. However, what was meant to be a routine journey turned anxious when the ValueJet aircraft, which had earlier stopped in Luanda, Angola, for refuelling, developed a technical fault mid-air.

About 25 minutes after take-off, the pilot made an emergency U-turn back to Luanda after a loud crack appeared on the aircraft’s windscreen.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed in an official statement that the cracked windscreen forced the flight to return to Luanda, where all players, officials, and accompanying government delegates safely disembarked.

The federation noted that the incident occurred after a routine refuelling stop, with the pilot “guiding the airplane safely back to the airport in Luanda”.

Following the incident, the NFF disclosed that ValueJet Airline worked closely with relevant Nigerian government authorities, including the Ministers of Aviation and Foreign Affairs, and the Chief of Staff to the President, to secure flight permits for a replacement aircraft to continue the journey to Nigeria.

“The ValueJet Airline and the relevant Federal Government of Nigeria authorities are working assiduously to get the necessary overflying and landing permits for another aircraft to fly from Lagos, pick the delegation in Luanda, and fly them to Uyo,” the statement read.

The replacement aircraft eventually completed the journey on Sunday morning, ending nearly 12 hours of travel disruption for the team.

Eric Chelle’s men will now turn their attention to the all-important World Cup qualifier against the Benin Republic.

The match, scheduled for Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, is a crucial one for Nigeria, who are aiming to seal qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a challenging qualifying campaign.

William Troost-Ekong opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a Lesotho handball, before Akor Adams doubled the lead with a composed finish. Lesotho pulled one back through Kalake late in the game, but Nigeria held on to claim all three points.

Despite the victory, Nigeria remain second in Group C with 14 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic who won their own match to move to 17 points. With only one game left, Nigeria’s qualification hopes are still uncertain.

To top the group and qualify automatically, Nigeria must defeat Benin in the final match. They will also need to hope South Africa and Benin drop points, or significantly improve their goal difference in the event of a points tie.

Following a disappointing 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture last November at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria must now claim all three points to stay in contention in Group C.

With just two matches remaining in the group stage, the Super Eagles sit third with 11 points from eight games — three points behind group leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa. Only a win in Polokwane will keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive ahead of next week’s crucial clash against Benin Republic in Uyo.

Star striker Victor Osimhen returns to the starting XI to bolster Nigeria’s attack, lining up alongside Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Tolu Arokodare. In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are tasked with dictating play, while captain William Troost-Ekong anchors the defence. Stanley Nwabali retains his place in goal.

However, Nigeria will be without key players Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Cyriel Dessers due to injury.

Coach Eric Chelle and his squad know that anything short of victory could spell the end of their World Cup dreams.
