In a bid to relieve the economic stress on the citizens, further reduction was made on the sale of staple food items compared to the first phase, as Rice that was sold for #2300 last month now goes for #2100, Beans sold  #2700 last month goes for #2300, Yam that was  #1000 now goes for #900, Garri that was #750 now goes for #700.

The second phase of the program saw additional food items; Spaghetti was sold for #900 as against #1400 in the market, and a sachet of Indomie Noodles was sold for #190 against #300, while a packet cost #7600 against the current market price of #9,500

A returning customer, Akinwale  Olusegun,  lauded the organizer of the scheme, noted that the food items are of high quality with a high sense of transparency.

He further hinted that the quality of the staple food items prompted him to purchase in the first phase, stressing that he bought more in this phase.

A first-timer in the scheme, Rafiu Quadri, hinted that he heard about the food subsidy programme from a friend, and he only came to ascertain how true the message is, stressing that he was convinced on seeing the quality of the food items.

In the same vein, Ilesanmi Oluwaseun, who is also a returning customer, enjoined the programme organizers not to relent in the scheme because the program has been beneficial to her as a low-income earner.

Speaking with the newsmen at the event, one of the Programme Officers, Tolulope Awoyale asserted that the 30% off Food Subsidy Progamme scheme has no political backing, but rather a mere “giving back” to the society and also a way of easing economic hardship on the citizens of Osun State.

However, she reiterated that the scheme would be a monthly program to reach 100 families each month, as at least 30 individuals were present at the event.

The governor disclosed that his administration will soon begin implementing the sale of other subsidized foodstuffs across the 20 local governments of the state.

Abiodun noted that the implementation of the scheme across the state would help deepen the reach of the initiative, adding that food items like garri, rice, and beans would be sold at largely subsidised prices.

The governor made this known during the ceremony held at the Arcade Ground of the governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor while noting that both the federal and state governments believe that the key to sustainable development lies in being strategic, guided by the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, fairness, and accountability, commended the state’s Head of Service and his team for a job well done.

He said that the distribution would cover groups like civil servants at both the federal and state levels, organised private sector, artisans, trade unions, non-governmental organisations, student bodies, market women, community development associations, and traditional and religious organisations, among others.

He urged the beneficiaries to maintain law and order at the various sales points and follow the timetable set by the committee in charge.

He said though the President made the pronouncement that subsidy was gone, he was not the one that put the policy in motion.

Dogara explained that before Tinubu was elected, there was no provision for subsidy payment in the budget approved by the National Assembly.

Speaking in a television programme, the former speaker said though Nigerians are feeling the accompanying effect of subsidy removal, it was the right move for the progress of the country.

He added that the era where Nigerians just talk about several challenges bedevelling the country without discussion on solution must be kept behind, saying real changes come with sacrifices.

On the subsidy removal and attendant consequences, Dogara said there was no provision for it, and anybody who said Tinubu suspended it was just joking.

Tinubu, on May 29, 2023, at his inauguration in Abuja, announced that his administration will remove the subsidy on Petroleum products.

“Subsidy is gone,” Tinubu exclaimed during his inaugural address at Eagle Square, Abuja, shortly after he was sworn in as the 16th President of Nigeria.

The President said there was no provision for subsidy in the national budget from June 2023 and, therefore, it stands removed.
