Jimoh officially declared Sowore wanted for allegedly inciting public unrest and attempting to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge, an action which he claims could lead to serious criminal charges.

The Commissioner made the confirmation while speaking on Nationl Television that Sowore has not reported to the police since the declaration. He reaffirmed that the police would continue to pursue the case until the activist is apprehended.

“My declaration that Sowore is wanted remains in force,” CP Jimoh said. “We are committed to ensuring that he is arrested, investigated, and prosecuted according to the law.”

According to Jimoh, Sowore’s lawyer contacted him via text message on Monday while he was responding to a separate riot. The message, he said, was forwarded to the Officer-in-Charge of Legal at the Nigerian Police for follow-up. The lawyer reportedly agreed that Sowore would report to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, to assist with the investigation.

However, the Commissioner noted that despite the arrangement, Sowore failed to turn up as agreed.

“He did not report to the police yesterday as he was expected to,” Jimoh said. “We will continue to do everything within the boundaries of the law to bring him in for questioning and, if necessary, prosecution.”

Jimoh also defended his decision to declare Sowore wanted, asserting his legal right to do so. He challenged anyone disputing his actions to seek redress in court.

Additionally, CP Jimoh dismissed claims made by Sowore that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, had ordered for him to be “shot on sight.” Jimoh called the allegation a “major misinformation,” stressing that the IGP would never issue such an order.

“These kinds of statements are false and intended to cause public unrest,” Jimoh said. “For Sowore to claim the IGP gave such an order is not only misleading, but it’s also a deliberate attempt to stir confusion and unrest.”

The Commissioner further stated that Sowore’s actions appear to be part of a broader strategy to incite chaos in Lagos, reinforcing the need for his arrest.

The activist made this known on his official X handle Sowore made this known on his X handle, noting that the protest would be a “historic” march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, while assuring that it would be conducted peacefully and legally to demand the release of the IPOB leader.

The activist wrote, “We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 am.”

Sowore urged all South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to join the demonstration.

“Every governor, senator, member of the House, traditional ruler, priest, eze, Igbo person, and every Nigerian who believes in Kanu’s freedom should come out and do more than talk,” he added.

He also emphasised that he had reached out to other prominent Igbo leaders, including Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Abia State Governor, Alex Otti; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join the protest.

“This is not the time for hesitation. If we genuinely believe that MaziNnamdiKanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act, now, not later,” he wrote.

Recall that Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his re-arrest in 2021 after his controversial extradition from Kenya. Despite multiple court rulings ordering his release, the Federal Government has yet to comply, drawing condemnation from rights groups and political leaders.

He faces charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement, filed by the Federal Government before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu has consistently pleaded not guilty to all counts.

In October 2022, the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him of all charges, ruling that his extradition to Nigeria violated international laws.

He also replied to the SSS, insisting he would not delete the posts.

He wrote, “The State Security Service, alias @OfficialDSSNG today filed a 5-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against ‘X’, facebook and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have somehow committed a set of “novel” offences they invented and spread across five counts.

“It’s hard to believe there’s anyone sensible left in these offices that should be making Nigeria work. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.”
