The destruction took place on Friday during the South-West Zonal Destruction Flag-off Ceremony, held at the Moniya Dumpsite.

According to NAFDAC, the exercise is part of its ongoing efforts to protect public health by permanently removing dangerous, falsified, and non-compliant products from circulation. A statement shared by the agency on its website and social media channels highlighted that the items destroyed included substandard medicines, counterfeit cosmetics, unsafe processed foods, and various expired goods.

These products were seized from manufacturers, importers, and distributors across the South-West region.

The destruction also included expired and damaged goods voluntarily submitted by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations, NGOs, and trade groups.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, praised the strong collaboration with other enforcement agencies in the fight against counterfeit products. In particular, she highlighted the recent handover of 25 containers of counterfeit and substandard pharmaceuticals seized by the Nigeria Customs Service for destruction.

“We commend the strong partnership with @CustomsNG, especially the recent handover of 25 containers of counterfeit and substandard pharmaceuticals, including a reefer container, for destruction,” Adeyeye said. “This is a clear demonstration of our collective commitment to protecting the health of Nigerians.”

The Director-General also acknowledged the role of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the operation, calling their involvement “crucial” in the ongoing national battle against counterfeiters.

The doctors cited the failure of the hospital management and the state government to address their long-standing demands as the reason for the industrial action.

On April 8, the doctors suspended a month-long strike to give the hospital management and the state government time to meet their demands.

Three months after suspending their strike, the doctors sent a letter to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Olawale Olakulehin, issuing a three-week ultimatum for the management to meet their outstanding demands.

The letter, dated July 8, and titled “Re: Notice of industrial action,” said Congress agreed to grant a grace period of three weeks, during which formal notifications will be sent to relevant stakeholders, including the Oyo State Government and the hospital management, to encourage prompt action on the unresolved issues.

“Kindly note that failure to meet the outlined demands by the 29th of July, 2025 will result in the commencement of total and indefinite industrial action. We trust in your responsiveness and look forward to swift, positive outcomes.”

The Oyo State Government has debunked allegations that it had replaced the car park at Bola Ige International Business Complex, popularly known as Gbagi Market, with new shops and extorted money from unsuspecting traders overnight.

This was made known in a statement by the state Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Adeniyi Adebisi,

Adebisi explained that the Gbagi market redevelopment effort is being spearheaded in phases by the State Government, under the supervision of the ministry, in close partnership with the market leadership and representatives of zonal traders’ associations.

The commissioner said the portion of land being referred to was not an official car park but an underutilised area, prone to illegal vending and security risks.

He said following broad consultation with stakeholders, it was approved for formal stall development to promote orderliness and improve access and safety within the market environment.

Adebisi reiterated that no trader would be unjustly displaced, and the project will be executed in line with the master plan agreed upon with all key market stakeholders.

He, therefore, urged members of the public, particularly media outlets, to verify facts before spreading reports capable of inciting public unrest or misleading residents.

The commission also encouraged market leaders and traders to channel concerns or inquiries to the Market Support Desk at the ministry or reach out directly to the designated liaison officers.
