On Monday, 2nd June, 2025, the official Facebook handle of the Osun State Ministry of Works posted a claim that the 1.507km Gbanko – Gaa Road construction in Ejigbo had been completed. The claim spurred comments from several eyewitnesses who clarified that, contrary to the claims of the Ministry of Works, the road was yet to be completed.

Redio Afinju presents a fact-check on the project.

CONTRACTOR

According to the Project Description on site, the contract was awarded to Contemporary Nature Co. Limited of Plot 1, Block V, Phase II, Surulere Housing Scheme, Alajue Road, Ede. A public search of the company reveals that it was registered on the 20th day of December, 2022.

Redio Afinju confirms that the road is up to 1.507km as specified on the Project Description. Our app-based measure of the road returned a distance of 1.49km, as shown in the image below, the 0.08km difference being very likely due to the start-point of measurement.

The contractor appears to have abandoned a paver on the road, as some persons within the Gbanko community confirmed to Redio Afinju that the paver had been left on the road for about one month.

STATE OF ROAD

Redio Afinju confirms that indeed, the road has been tarred from the Gbanko end. However, we also confirm that the Contractor has not completed the project as claimed by the Osun State Ministry of Works. The attached video shows the current state of the road, showing the tarred portion and the abandoned portion of the road.

We also confirm that a total distance of 244.15m or 0.244km of the said road has not been tarred. Stone base has been rolled on the abandoned segment, but asphalt has not been laid. Community dwellers told Redio Afinju that the construction has stopped for about a month.

The photo and video below show the distance and condition of the untarred Gaa end of the road, contradicting the claim by the Osun State Ministry of Works that the road has been completed.

All efforts by Redio Afinju to contact the Contractor for reactions, before filing this report, were abortive.

According to Redio Afinju’s fact-check, the Gbanko – Gaa Road has not been completed. We will publish updates to the report when the road is completed.

The Executive Director of the society, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, made this known while presenting the September State of the State address, where he noted that despite huge revenue from the Federal Government, which has not translated to human development in the state, the government is keen at earning from mining instead of addressing the environmental degradation.

“We remain well informed about the rising revenue accruing to the Osun State Government from the coffers of the Federal Government.”

“It is also worthy of mention, the ongoing issues in the gold mining sector of the State. It is sad that the State Government has over the years, prioritized revenue over the proper management of the environment around the mining sites. It is also sad, that the State Government’s release, where it accused Segilola of several infractions, prioritized earnings over proper management of the environment.”

Oyedokun also charged the government to be actively steadfast in productive sectors ranging from Agriculture to Tourism, which will be of much importance to the state at large, instead of pumping funds into worthless projects that have no direct bearing on human development.

“While the Federal Government is being pressured to implement the right policies, State Governments cannot continue to be irresponsible, expending billions of State Resources on frivolities that have no direct bearing on the well-being of the people.”

Speaking on the new minimum wage, Oyedokun affirmed that fingers are crossed on the government’s disposition to the issue, stressing that Civil Servants’ welfare should be paramount to the government.

He however called on the Federal Government to end the flotation of the Naira and proposed the return of fuel subsidies until a time in the future when proper structures have been put in place to manage the consequences of total deregulation.
