In a joint statement, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Special Adviser to Information and Strategy in Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that the boxing star had been released following satisfactory health assessments and will now focus on recuperation outside the hospital setting.

According to the statement, the former Boxer is currently “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” over the loss of his two close friends.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states, once again, commiserate with the families of the two young men – Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami – who tragically and unfortunately lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on the 29th Dec 2025.

“We pray that the Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.

“Anthony and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos this afternoon to pay their final respects to his two departed friends as they were being prepared for repatriation scheduled for later this evening.

“Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident.”

They also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the support he gave throughout the process.

“We also want to appreciate the team of Doctors and medical personnel at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, who attended to Anthony and those who sustained injuries.”

The update followed Joshua’s involvement in a car accident, which claimed the lives of his two close friends in the Makun area of Ogun State.

The incident that happened around 11:00 am along the heavily trafficked Lagos-Ibadan Expressway indicated that an SUV transporting Joshua collided with a stationary truck.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has, however, attributed the crash to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

He explained that unsafe abortion remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Nigeria, particularly among women in low- and middle-income communities.

The government, he added, will collaborate with healthcare professionals, civil society, and legal experts to strengthen the implementation of the SToP guidelines.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the fatalities, stating that all five passengers in the tricycle died on the spot. The truck, bearing the number plate GRZ 767 XA, failed to stop in time and fatally crushed the smaller vehicle.

“According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver didn’t realize he had collided with the tricycle until his vehicle ran over it and its occupants,” Akinbiyi said.

Following the incident, the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, alongside the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue operation to the scene. Tensions quickly escalated, with angry residents attempting to attack the responders. The situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of security operatives, including members of the Amotekun Corps.

The remains of the victims have since been evacuated to a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident, saying the number of people who lost their lives is unconfirmed.

According to Akinbiyi, a petrol-laden 33,000-litre tanker overturned due to excessive speeding. It spilled its contents on the highway, triggering a fire outbreak and spreading to other vehicles and electric poles.

Akinbiyi said, “The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today, along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway, due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported.

“Though the casualty figures cannot be ascertained presently, rescue and emergency services made up of TRACE, Ogun State and Nestlé PLC Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police are still on the ground to restore normalcy and orderliness after quenching the fire and carrying out the decantation process.”

He added that due to the ongoing rescue efforts, traffic within the corridor has been diverted to a single lane.

The spokesperson urged motorists in the area to cooperate with emergency responders.

“The general public, particularly the motoring public on transit along the route, is implored to be calm, patient, and cooperate with the diversion and re-routing of traffic put in place by TRACE, Police, Ogun State Fire Service, FRSC, Amotekun, and the NSCDC.

The governor disclosed this when he recieved the Strategic Advisor, Fayad Fayad, and the Public Relations and Communication Officer of Mac Group, Hassan Fayad, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where the state secured an investment pledge in the range of $1.8 billion to $2.5 billion.

The governor attributed the improved economic development to critical infrastructure, provision of basic amenities, and reinvigorated tourist centers across the state.

The governor also revealed that the state’s foremost tourist center, Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, generates about N20 million on a weekly basis after its renovation, compared to the same amount generated yearly before the turnaround of the tourist centre

“We are one of the two best-performing states in Nigeria. We are the fastest-growing economy in the country. Our economy, between 2019 and 2025, has quadrupled from N3.5 trillion to N16 trillion,” he said

The Strategic Adviser, Mac Group, Fayad Fayad, while speaking, said his organization is bringing an investment worth between $1.8 billion and $2.5 billion that will focus on hospitality and entertainment.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, disclosed this while officially opening the second edition of the Bondsmen Stakeholders Forum at the Ceremonial Court, Judiciary Complex, Kobape Road, Abeokuta.

Justice Dipeolu revealed that the scheme has played a pivotal role in curbing congestion in the state’s correctional facilities, while cleansing a bail system long plagued by corruption and inefficiency.

“When we last met, we celebrated the release of 2,800 defendants between January 2021 and October 2023. Today, I am delighted to report that between October 2023 and July 2025, this figure has grown exponentially.

“This is not simply a statistic; it represents over 8,000 individuals whose rights to liberty and presumption of innocence have been preserved, significantly alleviating the immense pressure on our correctional institutions,” she said.

The Chief Judge stressed that the progress made over the years is a testament to the effectiveness of the scheme and a key achievement of her administration’s seven-point agenda.

She also announced the licensing of a new company, Praise and Moremi Bail and Bonds Limited, which brings the total number of licensed bondsmen operating in the state to three.

However, Justice Dipeolu acknowledged challenges such as defendants absconding after being granted bail, noting this has necessitated the introduction of the 2025 Bondsmen Regulations.

She explained that this enhanced regulatory framework is designed to build upon the progress achieved, strengthening and standardising the operation of the scheme.

The Chief Judge urged bondsmen to embrace the judiciary’s digital vision by adopting technology and innovating their processes to align with this digital future.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Ogun State Bondsmen Licensing Board, Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora, praised the scheme’s contribution to prison decongestion but reported that out of 243 cases of defendants absconding, 212 have been swiftly rearrested due to the robust system in place.

Justice Ogunfowora stated that the scheme has helped eradicate the menace of fake sureties, touts, and corrupt civil servants seeking fees, while also creating employment opportunities, with the two bondsmen companies collectively employing over 80 staff.

He highlighted the launch of a Centralised Bondsmen Database, a digital platform offering real-time data on all defendants released through bondsmen, tracking court dates and appearances seamlessly, and fostering a fraud-proof ecosystem.

The state’s bond administrator, Olakulehin Oke, described innovations in the 2025 Bondsmen Regulations, including increased financial thresholds for licence categories: Category A raised from ₦10 million to ₦20 million and above, Category B from ₦5 million to ₦15 million, and Category C from ₦5 million to ₦10 million.

Oke warned that any bondsman with three clients absconding within six months will have their licence revoked, while others who flout regulations face up to a four-year ban, among additional measures to enhance the scheme’s success.

According to Odutola, the arrest followed a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by operatives of 71 PMF Awa Ijebu along the Ijebu Ode/Ibadan Expressway, near Refugees Camp Junction, Oru Ijebu, at about 2:00 p.m. on August 11, 2025.

“During the exercise, officers intercepted one Kadir Owolabi, male, who was riding a motorcycle. A search of his luggage led to the shocking discovery of three human skulls,” she said

She added that a follow-up investigation resulted in the arrest of another suspect, Jamiu Yisa, 53, at a location behind the Ijebu Ode Local Government Secretariat.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, to take over the matter for thorough investigation.
