Obaseki dismissed the claims as baseless, accusing the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, of spreading misinformation that could tarnish the country’s international reputation. He called on the current administration to verify the debt figures with the Debt Management Office, DMO, and to refrain from making reckless statements.

According to Obaseki, “No government whether local, state, or federal has the capacity to take out loans or enter debt agreements without the knowledge and approval of the DMO.”

He added that such claims were damaging to Edo’s image and could contribute to the perception that Nigeria is a “failed state.”

Obaseki criticized the remarks made by Afegbua, describing them as “false” and “irresponsible.” He suggested that the spread of such misinformation not only harmed the state’s image but also had wider consequences, potentially affecting how Nigeria is viewed abroad.

Obaseki also urged the public to question the N600bn debt figure, pointing out that any such debt would be recorded at the DMO. He challenged those making the claims to provide evidence from official records.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, who disclosed this in a statement said the committee, which will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, at Government  House in Benin City, will be chaired by  Ernest  Umakhihe.

While Anslem Ojezua will serve as deputy chairman, Frank Edebor will act as secretary.

Other members of the committee include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick  Idiake, and Rasaq Bello-Osagie. Additional members are Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.

Okpebholo in his inaugural speech on November 12 pledged that his administration would investigate the exclusion of 14 lawmakers from the State House of Assembly in 2019.

On Friday, the governor ordered a probe of the state civil service recruitment under Obaseki between  May and November 2024.

This was part of the activities marking the singer’s much-anticipated homecoming concert in his hometown of Benin.

 His arrival in Benin was greeted with pomp and pageantry.

Rema first gained recognition in 2018 for a freestyle that went viral on Instagram, covering D’Prince’s song “Gucci Gang.” In 2019, he made his formal music debut with the release of “Dumebi.”

The highly anticipated performance is set to take place at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on August 30.

This homecoming concert follows a prior attempt by Governor Godwin Obaseki to host Rema in December 2023, which was canceled owing to health concerns.

The party also called on its members still angry with the outcome of the governorship primaries that brought its current candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to be true party members and work for APC’s victory, which it said would only be achieved as a united family.

Speaking during the inauguration of the local government and ward campaign councils of Oredo Local Government Area, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the party, Dennis Idahosa, said a new APC government would continue from where  Adams Oshiomhole stopped in terms of flood control, rebuilding public schools, checking insecurity, cultism and ensuring respect for the traditional institution.

The Director General of the APC Campaign Council, Senator Matthew Uroghide, said the APC has done enough for the people to win the election including the party’s candidates who he said are sitting members of the National Assembly that have been working for their people.

Besides, he said Oredo is the heartbeat of politics in Edo South and that most of the political bigwigs in Oredo including himself who had been in different political parties are now all in one party so the victory of the party is sure.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director General of the Campaign Council in Oredo,  Osaro Obazee called for unity of the members for victory.

Obaseki, who spoke during an interview with journalists in Benin City, said there is no area or sector he pledged and talked about that hasn’t been impacted.

The governor, who said his government has laid a foundation for the state’s progress and development, noted that he would be remembered as the governor who changed the course of education in the state and led a number of reforms and programmes that have placed the State on the path of prosperity.

He said as Edo State Governor in the last few years, he has surpassed everything he promised he will do.

Obaseki further said one administration or one governor cannot do it all adding that what he has done is to lay a foundation and  would have a successor who will continue to build on that.

According to Obaseki, democracy is not a destination in itself but a process that will always be better.
