The royal father stated this at the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture in Ile-Ife, the capital of Osun State, on Thursday, where Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), delivered the keynote lecture.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; former Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom; among others.

Wike was the governor of oil-rich Rivers State from May 2015 to May 2023, before he was appointed FCT Minister in August 2023 by the President. Wike has also pledged to work for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, a move that has attracted scathing criticism from his party men in the PDP, who accuse the minister of being anti-party.

Some PDP founding fathers, such as Sule Lamido and Bode George, have also criticised Wike for being at the centre of the intra-party squabbles rocking the opposition party, while the minister has continued to dare the party leadership to expel him.

OAU MDCAN said the impending strike was in line with the directive of the association’s South-West zone which ordered clinical lecturers to shun duties following the refusal by the Vice Chancellors in three Federal universities in the region to place the lecturers on the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale as obtained in other medical colleges in Nigerian universities.

The association noted this in a statement obtained in Osogbo , which was signed by OAU MDCAN Chairman, Olufemi Ogundipe, and the General Secretary, Tajudin Adetunji.

It explained that the strike notice was preceded by a 21-day ultimatum given to the Vice Chancellors of the affected universities in the zone.

MDCAN further said that during the strike, all academic activities at the College of Health Sciences in OAU, involving clinical lecturers would be on hold, adding that its members could no longer tolerate huge disparity in emoluments and several years of income loss due to non-implementation of CONMESS in the university.

A consultant working in OAUTH, who preferred to remain anonymous to avoid victimisation, told newsmen that it may coincide with the commencement of the final-year examinations of Dental students already scheduled for Monday.

Reacting to this, the OAU Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, said the VC, Simeon Bamire was not available but promised to relate with him on the matter.

Olanrewaju, however, said the VC would not have deliberately denied workers their rights, stating he is people-friendly, and prioritises the welfare of staff and students.

There are fears it would jeopardise the final-year medical students’ examinations and the institution’s accreditation.

The strike, which began after a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government expired, stems from grievances about discriminatory practices in appointing university vice-chancellors and the non-implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, for clinical lecturers.

The association, which made specific reference to recent developments in some universities, including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, demanded the approval of an all-inclusive prototype of advertisement for the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

Giving further insight into the compliance of OAU clinical lecturers to the strike directive in a joint statement, the OAU MDCAN Chairman, Olufemi Ogundipe, and the General Secretary, Tajudin Adetunji, said academic activities at the college of Health Sciences of the university had been shut down.

They vowed not to return to work after the conclusion of the current national warning strike until clinical lecturers were placed on CONMESS as is the case in other federal universities.

The association highlighted the implications of the strike, particularly the risk of the college losing accreditation if those issues persisted.

The statement added that the fate of over 100 final-year medical students hangs in the balance.

The MDCAN urged the Federal Government and OAU authorities to urgently address the dwindling fortunes of medical education and the shortage of clinical lecturers.

The move is in response to a recent suicide attempt by a 200-level student who attempted suicide following academic struggles.

This is contained  an internal memo  from the university’s Senate Division.

The memo revealed that a special Committee of Deans meeting was convened to address the case of the affected student and thereafter came up with compassionate measures.

The memo, signed by the Deputy Registrar, M.S. Oluwajoba, revealed that the student, whose name was not stated, had transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education, and reportedly attempted suicide on October 16.

The incident prompted the Dean of the Faculty to take up the matter to the higher authorities.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the decision of the institution, noting this was to prevent further suicide attempts.
