The Nigeria Immigration Service has announced that users of its Passport Digital Platform will experience a temporary service disruption from 12:00 a.m. on 12 December to 6:00 am on 14 December, 2025.

This was disclosed in a public notice shared on the service’s official X handle and signed by its Public Relations Office, ACI AS Akinlabi.

According to the statement, the exercise aims to enhance system performance and improve the overall user experience.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public that it is carrying out routine maintenance on its Passport Digital Platform to enhance system performance and overall user experience.

“During this period, users will experience temporary service interruptions, slow response times, or limited access to selected NIS Passport Services,” the notice read.

The service appealed for public patience, noting that the exercise is essential to maintaining a secure and efficient digital passport ecosystem.

NIS also urged users who require assistance during the maintenance period to contact its support team via email at support@immigration.gov.ng or through its official social media handles.

According to the security analyst Zagazola Makama, in a post on X, mentioned that the incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. while the officers identified as Oyomide Zion and Hakeem Mashood were on routine movement in the area.

Makama noted that the Divisional Police Officer of Iddo Division received a distress call and immediately dispatched a patrol team to the scene at about 11:40 p.m.

Upon arrival, another immigration officer, Uduk James, reported that his colleagues had been shot.

The injured officers were evacuated to the Nigerian Air Force Base Hospital in Abuja, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Police sources quoted by Makama said the suspect, known as Pastor Darlington, mistook the officers for armed criminals and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

A manhunt is now underway to apprehend him as authorities urged the public to provide any useful information that may lead to his arrest.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed during the closing ceremony of a weeklong capacity-building training for personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS.

The capacity-building training is one of the measures adopted by the NIS to document everyone visiting the country.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration introduced the visa-on-arrival policy in 2020 as a short-stay visa issued at the point of entry.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the Federal Government would introduce landing and exit cards, which prospective visitors will pre-fill before coming into the country in place of the visa-on-arrival policy

He emphasised the need to harmonize the immigration data centre and have integrated solutions for decisions that have to do with migration into Nigeria.

He explained that such harmonization would make it impossible for approvals to be given without the clearance of Interpol, the criminal records system, and all background-checking agencies in real time.

Tunji-Ojo said security is not a sector where one can afford to be 99.9 percent correct, but that one has to be 100 percent, adding that they believe it is better to make decisions based on objectivity rather than subjectivity.

He added that it would lead to the cancellation of the visa-on-arrival process because the visa-on-arrival is not a system that works.

According to the Minister, technology must take its place.
