“Applications should be submitted online within three weeks from the date of this publication and note that the application is absolutely free,” he stated.

He emphasised that applicants must apply to only one of the four agencies of their choice as multiple applications will automatically call for disqualification.

The NCoS made this known in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, stating the figure represents approximately 74 percent of the country’s total inmate population of 80,879.

The registration, conducted in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission, is part of an ongoing effort to integrate inmates into Nigeria’s national identity database.

The service emphasized that the process is progressing steadily and that mechanisms have been established to ensure the seamless registration of the remaining inmates.

While reacting to recent media reports claiming that NIN registration had yet to begin in any custodial centre, the NCoS described such reports as false and misleading.

It reaffirmed that the enrolment of inmates has not only commenced but is yielding tangible results.

The Police Spokesperson for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, told NAN on Wednesday that the police state command had not been officially briefed or informed of the incident by the Nigerian Correctional Service.

He said, “We also heard about the escape, but there is no official report made to the police by the NCoS. Our Intel revealed to us that actually, there was an escape.

“The cause of the escape is what we don’t know because our men have gone there. From the intelligence report we got, there is nothing we can lay our hands on that made the inmates escape.

NAN reports that the NCoS declared seven inmates missing as a result of rain that damaged the security perimeter of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa in the early hours of Tuesday.

The heavy rainfall around 2:00 a.m. caused a breach in the facility’s structure, allowing the inmates to escape.

Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, signed by the Deputy Controller of Corrections, Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and assured the public that efforts were underway to return the escapees to custody.

She said, “The service is working closely with sister security agencies as well as community leaders to recapture the escapees and bring them back to custody.

“However, the Service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.”

Authorities have since launched a manhunt to recapture the fugitives.

NCoS Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Corrections ,ACC, Abubakar Umar, made this known while speaking to reporters in Abuja.

Umar said that the total number of inmates in centres across the country is 84,741, comprising 82,821 males and 1,920 females currently.

The NCoS spokesman put the total number of Awaiting Trial Inmates  at 57,750, comprising 56,303 males and 1,447 females.

Umar said that majority of inmates in custody were Awaiting Trial Persons, posing a significant challenge for the service due to their high numbers.

He, however, assured that the service was taking steps to address the issue and ensuring timely judicial processing for the Awaiting Trial Persons.

Umar stated that the service’s efforts to build partnerships with other agencies have paid off, leading to enhanced security and positive results in and around custodial facilities.

Umar also noted that the service saw significant enhancements in the treatment and care of inmates, particularly in the areas of personal reformation, rehabilitation programs, and successful reintegration into society.
