The State Governor Ademola Adeleke in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, oredered the immedaite lockdown of the town until calm is fully restored.

The state government said the unrest, which started on Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday, was linked to tensions arising from the death of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, who passed away last week after a brief illness.

Adeleke condemned the violence, saying his administration “will always not be a party to any untoward civil disobedience capable of truncating the existing peace and harmony being currently experienced throughout Osun State, Igbajo inclusive.”

He warned that anyone found instigating or participating in acts capable of worsening the crisis would be made to face the law.

“As a government that believes in total compliance with the rule of engagement in ensuring peace and order at all times, my administration will not fold its arms to allow the breach of law and order anywhere in the state.

The governor directed the Army, Police, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to commence 24-hour surveillance of the community.

According to reports, Famodun was installed as monarch in 2022 at the twilight of the administration of Adegboyega Oyetola.

He was later removed through an executive order issued by Adeleke, who appointed Oba Ademola Makinde in his place.

However, in January 2025, the Osun State High Court reinstated Oba Famodun, a decision that is currently being challenged on appeal.

Oba Oloyede, the 27th Apetumodu, was recently sentenced to more than four years’ imprisonment in the U.S. for COVID-19 loan fraud.

He was also ordered to forfeit assets and pay over $4.4m in restitution.

The meeting, held within the palace and presided over by the Asalu of Ipetumodu, Sunday Adedeji, progressed without chaos until a prince demanded that Adedeji, as the most senior surviving kingmaker, write a formal letter to Governor Adeleke declaring the throne vacant
Adedeji, however, rejected the request and reportedly recused himself from any move to declare the stool vacant.

His stance erupted a shouting match among the attendees, causing the meeting to break down.

Since the judgement, Ipetumodu has been unsettled, with calls mounting for the state government to decide on the monarch’s fate.

Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dosu Babatunde, informed reporters that the government would obtain a Certified True Copy of the U.S. judgmet before taking action.

Security was tight at the disrupted meeting, with Department of State Services operatives stationed in a patrol van outside the palace.

He added that the government would obtain the CTC of the judgment before making any decision regarding the stool.

Recall, the 62-year-old king, who is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, was sentenced to 56 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $4,408,543.38 in restitution.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, the monarch forfeited his Medina, Ohio, home, purchased with proceeds of the scheme, and an additional $96,006.89 traced to fraud.

He was convicted for leading a conspiracy to exploit COVID-19 emergency loan programmes designed to assist struggling small businesses.

Meanwhile, calm reigned in Ipetumodu, though residents were observed discussing the issue in hushed tones.

The most senior chief in the community, Sunday Adedeji, when contacted, said, “May God never allow chaos in our community. By the grace of God, He will be in total and complete control. There is no crisis in the town, and we do not envisage any.”

According to reports, a fresh battle between the Alaafin, Oba Owoade and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, sprang up after the Alaafin faulted the Ooni’s decision to confer the title of Okanlomo of Oduwa on a businessman, Dotun Sanusi, during the unveiling of an indigenous social media network at Ilaji Hotel, Ibadan.

The statement stated that Alaafin is a veritable custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, and has always prioritized the safety and welfare of his subjects at all times, adding that the monarch relied heavily on the will and wishes of his subjects.

Durojaiye said the Alaafin would never compromise tradition, culture and development of his people for a pot of porridge.

He said the monarch operates a government that is judged by its result, as prosperity, security and well-being of the people dictated his popularity both in the palace and in the empire at large.

The statement reads in part, “Why Alaafin does not need to get into any battle for supremacy with any Oba, either in Yorubaland or anywhere in the universe? These immortal words of Alexander Graham Bell, the most successful men in the end are those whose success is the result of steady accretion.

“He (Alaafin) is a veritable custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, and has always taken into consideration the safety and welfare of his subjects and will never compromise tradition, culture and development of his people for a pot of porridge.

“Alaafin combines humility with royalty to meet the modern-day demands. Kabiyesi (the king who no one questions). Iku Baba Yeye (The one who commands death/he who is parent to death). Alashe (He who wields authority). Ekeji Orisha (Second-in-command to the gods). The Alaafin was inducted into the mysteries of various gods like Ifa, Sango etc to be the direct representative of these deities on earth.”

The statement added, “At the hallowed ground of the Yoruba ancient shrine, as Owoade made a covenant with illustrious Yoruba ancestors that he would defend, protect and add glamour to the Yoruba norms and tradition. Oduduwa’s Principal minister and grandson, Oranmiyan (Because Oduduwa begot Okanbi, (an only child and Okanbi begot Oranmiyan, among others, namely Ila-Orangun, Oni-Sabe, Olu-Popo, Ala-Ketu, Oba-Benin) founded the city of Oyo when prolonged drought struck Ile-Ife as a result of people’s emigration.

“Oyo simply rose to prominence through wealth gained from trade and its military skills. It was the largest West African empire, the most important and authoritative of all the early Yoruba principalities. More so, the British, as it was in their tradition, recognised lineage as meaningful supremacy and legitimacy, preferring to sign the Treaty of Cessation with the Alaafin as the Superior Head of the Yoruba Nation.

He has been indicted for conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering.

Oloyede was installed as the monarch of Ipetumodu in 2019 and frequently traveled between Nigeria and the US for royal and personal engagements.

However, he has been missing for nearly a year and was absent at three major traditional festivals, including the annual ‘egungun festival and Edi celebration’.

The US Department of Transportation has now issued a statement in which it was revealed that a grand jury indicted Oloyede and one Edward Oluwasanmi.

The documents showed that Oloyede and Oluwasanmi were arrested on April 5, 2024.

The indictment claims that from April 2020 to February 28, 2022, Oloyede and Oluwasanmi used PPP and EIDL applications that contained false information to receive monies.

They also allegedly submitted falsified tax and wage documents to support these applications.

Relevant US authorities are working with the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, on the case.
