According to reports, Jorge Antonio Sanchez Ortega was detained in Tijuana, Baja California, and brought before a judge.

Colosio, the Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate, was shot during a campaign rally in Tijuana on March 23, 1994. The murder is seen as a pivotal moment in Mexican political history.

Weeks earlier Colosio had delivered a speech criticizing the corrupt old guard of the ruling party.

As with the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy, Colosio’s murder unleashed a storm of conspiracy theories about who was behind it.

Although Mario Aburto Martinez was convicted as the sole perpetrator and remains in prison, the identity of those who may have ordered the killing is still unknown.

Sanchez Ortega was briefly arrested at the time but released the next day. According to reports, he was employed then as an agent for the Center of Investigation and National Security, back then Mexico’s equivalent of the US Central Intelligence Agency.

Authorities have not confirmed whether new evidence has emerged.

In Mexico City, torrential rains also disrupted operations at Benito Juárez International Airport, one of Latin America’s busiest air hubs, where flights were briefly suspended due to poor visibility. Earlier this month, similar flooding forced cancellations and delays at the same airport, which handled over 45 million passengers in 2024.

Mexico’s rainy season typically runs from May to November, but officials say this year has brought unusually intense storms. The capital has recorded its heaviest rainfall since 1952, while the National Water Commission reported that June 2025 ranked as the third-rainiest month since 1985.

Experts warn that climate change is fueling extreme weather events, increasing the risk of destructive flooding across the region.

Local media identified the slain judge as Edmundo Pinzon, president of the Superior Court of Justice in Guerrero state, saying he was shot at least four times in his car outside an Acapulco courthouse.

In October, the mayor of the state capital Chilpancingo was killed and decapitated just days after taking office.

Weeks later, armed clashes between alleged gang members and security forces left 19 people dead in the state. Last month, a dozen dismembered bodies were discovered in vehicles in Chilpancingo.

The Guerrero state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that it was investigating the crime of aggravated homicide against Edmundo, in line with the usual practice of not giving full names.

The killing comes just over a week after President Claudia Sheinbaum led a meeting of the National Public Security Council in Acapulco, with state governors in attendance.

Spiraling violence, much of it linked to drug trafficking, has seen more than 450,000 people murdered in Mexico since 2006, when the government launched an offensive against organized crime.

Sheinbaum, who took office in October as Mexico’s first woman president, has ruled out launching a new war on drugs, as the controversial program was known.

She has pledged instead to stick to her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s hugs not bullets strategy of using social policy to address the causes of crime.

Last year, 1,890 murders were recorded in Guerrero.

The Ministry of Public Safety said in a statement, after initially giving a death toll of 20, a cargo truck was found with 16 men shot dead inside, while three others were found dead outside the vehicle. 

The events occurred in the municipality of La Concordia, near the border with Guatemala, where violence has been on the rise in recent years.

An initial investigation said the clash was between the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most powerful in Mexico, and another gang identified as the Chiapas and Guatemala cartel.

The ministry said in a statement that the two groups were battling over criminal control of the border area.

According to the non-governmental organization Insight Crime, the region is key for the trafficking of drugs, arms and migrants toward the United States,

Sheinbaum, a scientist by training, won around 58-60 percent of votes, according to preliminary official results from the National Electoral Institute.

In a nation where politics, crime and corruption are closely entangled, drug cartels went to extreme lengths to ensure that their preferred candidates win.

Voting was suspended in two municipalities in the southern state of Chiapas because of violence.

Sheinbaum has pledged to continue the outgoing president’s controversial hugs not bullets strategy of tackling crime at its roots.

As well as choosing a new president, Mexicans voted for members of Congress, several state governors and myriad local officials — a total of more than 20,000 positions.
