Two Rivers lawmakers have appealed for leniency over the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Nma Odu.

The House Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, and lawmaker from Degema, Peter Abbey, at a press briefing in Port Harcourt asked that the impeachment process be stalled, citing interventions by leaders, residents, and constituents.

“Rivers State issued a notice of impeachment on Governor Fubara and his Deputy. We appeal to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and see how we can solve this matter without the impeachment proceedings,” Nwankwo said.

“Having listened to so many calls from our elders and leaders, both within and outside the state, we are begging our colleagues to reconsider our steps and see how this matter can be resolved amicably, even though the governor and his deputy have infringed on the Constitution”.

Recall that Fubara and Odu were said to have been served an impeachment notice over alleged gross misconduct.

The Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a notice signed by 26 lawmakers, outlining multiple allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, including extra-budgetary spending of over N800bn without legislative approval, withholding funds allocated to the Assembly Service Commission, demolition of the Assembly complex, and defiance of Supreme Court rulings on legislative autonomy.

However, Fubara said he had yet to receive an impeachment notice from the lawmakers.

The development marks a renewed escalation of the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, stemming from the fallout between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Previous impeachment attempts in 2023 and 2025 were halted by presidential interventions, before a state of emergency was declared by President Bola Tinubu last March.

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of two members of the Kano State House of Assembly.

He described the loss as sad, tragic and painful.

The lawmakers, Aminu Ungogo, who represented Ungogo constituency, and Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal constituency, died in separate incidents within about one hour on Wednesday.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said their deaths had created a void, depriving the people of their constituencies of committed representation.

“I offer my condolences to their families and constituents as well as the government and people of Kano State.

“I also commiserate with the presiding officers and all members of the Kano State House of Assembly over the demise of their respected colleagues,” the President said.

Tinubu prayed for the repose of the souls of the late lawmakers and asked God to grant comfort to their families.

“The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the late lawmakers and divine comfort to their families,” the statement said.

The deaths of the two legislators have thrown Kano politics into mourning.

According to reports, the lawmakers died hours apart on the same day, a development that shocked colleagues and residents of the state.

The House of Representatives is currently holding a special plenary session focused on national security, admitting delegations from St. Kitts and Nevis and the United States Embassy.

At the meeting, the lawmakers are expected to consider a consolidated internal assessment covering security incidents, oversight findings, and implementation of past resolutions. Committees handling defence, national security, intelligence, police affairs, human rights, foreign affairs, women and youth development, and disaster preparedness delivered evidence-based presentations.

In opening remarks, the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, reaffirmed that Nigeria’s sovereignty remains non-negotiable, while stressing cooperation with the United States on security matters. He noted that both Christian and Muslim communities have come under attack from terrorist groups and referenced instability and coups in parts of West Africa.

The deputy speaker announced plans to pass legislation within months to outlaw ransom negotiations, impose penalties on officials involved in such deals, and set clear criteria for disarmament. He also pressed for an investigation into suspected ransom payments and negotiations with armed groups.

The session came amid rising insecurity marked by mass abductions of students and worshippers, especially in northern states where schools have been forced to close. Opposition figures have criticised the government’s handling of the crisis, urging stronger action to protect citizens.

The discussions followed a recent hearing in the US Congress examining Nigeria’s security situation and concerns over persistent violence, abductions, and attacks on communities.

The defection came ahead of the planned defection of Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba, to the APC.

In a viral video, the lawmakers were seen swapping their caps for those emblazoned with the insignia of President Bola Tinubu. The legislators were also handed brooms, the symbol of the APC.

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has appealed to members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to consider the interest of the people of the state and embrace peace to resolve the political dispute that is continually troubling the state.

Fubara made the appeal when he commissioned some projects in Okrika Local Government Area of the state, noting, it is important at this stage that we all embrace peace.

He said he needed peace to govern the state well, urging all dissatisfied political actors in the state to put all that had happened behind and commit to the full implementation of the February 28, 2025 raft of decisions handed over by the Supreme Court.

According to Fubara, the Supreme Court has made its judgment, there’s no option but to abide by it, adding that they have started the process.

The governor added that he is open any day, any time for total peace in the state because to govern well, there is the need for peace.
Recall that Fubara was denied access to the Assembly Quarters on Wednesday when he showed up to re-present the 2025 Budget of the state, as mandated by the House after the Supreme Court verdict of February 28, 2025.

The governor said he communicated his visit to Speaker Martins Amaewhule but the Assembly said it received no correspondence to the effect.

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory and immediate past governor of the state, Nyesom Wike said at a media chat in Abuja that there was nothing wrong if the lawmakers decide to sack Fubara for alleged impeachable offences, including withholding their salaries for months.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court recognized Amaewhule as the House Speaker and barred the apex bank, CBN, and others from releasing funds to the Government of Rivers State until it purges itself of what the court described as flagrant disobedience to court orders

The apex court also declared the local government election conducted in the state on October 5, 2024, invalid and ordered the governor to conduct a fresh poll, as well as re-present the 2025 Budget to the Amaewhule-led House.
