Emergency responders are still battling a massive fire that erupted on Christmas Eve at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, more than 10 hours after it began.

It was gathered that the blaze, which started around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, spread to at least four adjacent buildings, causing widespread damage in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.

The fire reportedly originated on the fourth or fifth floor of the high-rise, which is primarily used as a warehouse for clothing, before escalating to other floors.

Video footage from the scene, shared by the NTA Network on Thursday, showed thick plumes of smoke engulfing the structure, with bright orange flames bursting from multiple floors and debris littering the streets.

NTA stated that, “More than 10 hours after the inferno that engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, emergency responders are yet to completely put out the fire.

“Flames emanating from the building can still be seen from a distance, while residents and business owners assess the extent of their losses. Many people in the area have been unable to sleep. At least four buildings, including a church and a mosque, have been affected by the fire.”

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to remain calm following the incident.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, stated in a press release on Thursday that no casualties were recorded, while the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

Omotoso said the governor, who had been personally monitoring the situation since it was reported, immediately directed the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to intensify response efforts and ensure the evacuation of adjoining buildings.

According to him, the distress call was received at about 4:41 p.m., prompting an immediate response from fire crews at the Ebute Elefun and Dolphin fire stations, with reinforcement from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station and the Alausa headquarters.

According to intelligence reports, the FCCPC team had aimed to crack down on traders allegedly rebaging rice in various brand names and reproducing rice bags from firms that have left Nigeria since 2015, including Royal Stallion and Caprice rice.

The FCCPC alleged that rice bagged in the names of Royal Stallion, Mama Gold and Caprice companies were still being sold.

FCCPC said, “Our surveillance has revealed this deceptive practice is potentially misleading consumers and violating consumer protection law.”

Despite evidence of alleged offences, the traders refused to cooperate with FCCPC officials, citing lack of notification to the market leader.

The resistance highlighted tensions between regulators and market stakeholders.

But, despite the resistance, the FCCPC team sealed a shop involved in the reproduction.

The tragic incident sparked panic among guests and staff at the hotel after a disturbing noise was heard from one of the rooms.

According to eyewitness accounts, Daniel had checked into the hotel at around 5 p.m. alongside two other male companions. A female guest, later identified as the victim, joined them shortly after. However, by approximately 10 p.m., unusual sounds were heard from their room, prompting hotel staff and other lodgers to investigate.

One of the guests, who gave his name simply as Adio, recounted the moment the situation escalated. “I had been in the hotel since Wednesday. That evening, I heard a strange noise from the next room. Someone alerted a security officer, and when no one responded to the knock, the door was opened with a spare key. That’s when we saw a woman lying motionless in a pool of blood.”

The shocking discovery led to an immediate alarm within the hotel, as staff began searching for the suspects. While two of the occupants had already fled, Daniel was found hiding within the hotel premises as he attempted to escape. He was subdued by staff and other guests before being handed over to the police.

A hotel worker, who requested anonymity, said the suspect was caught trying to flee through the gate. “When we noticed two had escaped, we knew the third might still be nearby. During the search, we saw him running and managed to catch him. He was beaten by some angry guests before the police arrived.”

According to the source, Daniel allegedly confessed during the scuffle that he and his accomplices had lured the woman to the hotel with the intent of killing her for ritual purposes.

Preliminary police investigations revealed the victim’s name as Endurance, a native of Akwa Ibom State.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the hotel manager reported the crime to the Ayobo Police Station.
