The deputy speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Nojeed Fatai, as well as the Chief Whip of the Assembly, Sanni Okanlawon, also resigned from their positions.

The plenary was after a meeting with lawmakers, which was attended by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

After the meeting, Obasa met with Lawal Pedro, the Lagos Attorney General, and Cornelius Ojelabi, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos.

The plenary proceeded without incident as security operatives surrounded the complex to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Mojisola Meranda, Segun Ajiboye, confirming the development said Obasa and his team allegedly broke into the Speaker’s office.

A report revealed that the police escorts attached to Meranda were withdrawn ahead of Obasa’s return to the Assembly.

Similarly, Obasa’s security details were said to have been reinstated.

Recall that in January, lawmakers from the state had impeached Obasa for gross misappropriation while he was in the United States, US.

Upon his return, Obasa described his impeachment as unconstitutional, arguing that it did not follow due process.

Meranda, a former Deputy Speaker, was sworn in to replace Obasa and got the blessing of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council, GAC.

Obasa, after returning to parliament with police and State Security Service details for the first time since he was removed on January 13 said he has resumed, and remains the Speaker of the Assembly.

Olukayode said such misleading and false stories should be disregarded by the general public, emphasizing that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection.

According to the Assembly, they were elected under the ruling party’s leadership, the ruling party remains united and focused on delivering its mandate to the people of Lagos State.  

The  AAssembly added that the falsehood being spread originates from agents of destabilisation who seek to create unnecessary tension and division within the Assembly.

There were rumours that the APC House members have found solace in LP, but the Assembly added that the rumoured defection was aimed to sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State.

It was reorted that armed security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, stormed the hallowed chamber earlier in the week.

They were there to allegedly stop the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, from having access to the Assembly till hours later.

Meranda was tearful when she finally presided over plenary, as lawmakers loyal to her passed a vote of confidence in her.

The state legislature has been entangled in a leadership tussle that has been described as the mother of all political disasters currently going on in the country.

It all started after the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the speaker of the Assembly and the election of Meranda.

Obasa has insisted that his removal did not follow due process and has gone to court to challenge the process.

However, the Lagos Assembly insists no external forces are involved in the leadership tussle.

This led to a confrontation between lawmakers and security officers, with lawmakers eventually regaining access to the assembly.

During the plenary session, lawmakers discussed the security breach and expressed a vote of confidence in Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

They also decided to investigate the incident and submit their findings to President Bola Tinubu and SSS Director General, Oluwatosin Ajayi.

The DSS had initially explained that the request came as a letter from the Assembly dated February 14, 2025, which specifically sought increased security due to potential threats.

In the letter, the management of the Lagos State Assembly informed security agencies in Lagos that there was credible information suggesting plans to forcefully reinstate the impeached speaker of the state assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on February 18, 2025.

The assembly management stressed that the development posed a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.

Recall that Meranda became the Lagos legislature’s first female speaker on January 13, 2025, after Obasa’s removal.

Obasa was abroad when replaced, and all principal positions and committees were dissolved following his impeachment.

Upon returning, Obasa claimed his removal did not follow due process, insisting he remained the assembly’s speaker.
