Russia has shown no sign of ending its three-and-a-half-year invasion of Ukraine, pushing hardline demands for ending the war, despite efforts by the United States to broker a peace deal.

Russia, which denies targeting civilians in Ukraine, said it had struck a plant and a logistics hub in Kyiv.

Its defence ministry said ‘’no strikes were carried out on other targets within the boundaries of Kyiv”, explicitly denying responsibility for the government building strike.

Police cordoned off the area surrounding the building, the roof and upper floors of which sustained damage.

Russia fired at least 810 drones and 13 missiles at Ukraine in a new record, according to the Ukrainian air force.
“Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have already begun long ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war,” Zelensky said.

He discussed the attack in a call with French President, Emmanuel Macron, and said that France would help Ukraine strengthen its defence.

The capital Kyiv was hit hardest in the attack, where a ballistic missile struck a nine-story apartment building, killing 14 people and injuring 60 others while one person was killed and 10 others injured in the southern city of Odessa.

The Interior Ministry also added that 27 locations in Kyiv, including apartment buildings, educational institutions, and critical infrastructure facilities, were under attack overnight.

The head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, stated that Russia launched a total of 175 drones, along with more than 14 cruise missiles and two ballistic missiles at the capital, hitting residential areas.

This comes after the Arbat battalion founder was injured in an explosion in Moscow earlier this morning.

Sargsyan was severely injured following a blast in the entrance hall of a residential building in north-west Moscow, 12km from the Kremlin.

He was evacuated to a hospital by helicopter and placed in intensive care after the explosion.

However, the 46-year-old eventually succumbed to his injuries and gave up the ghost.

Kyiv had accused Sargsyan of helping Russian forces in their war effort.

Meanwhile, in December, the Ukrainian security service, SBU, said Sargsyan was a suspect in recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine.

The SBU added that Sargsyan was part of the inner circle of fugitive former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukraine’s air force said its units had downed four missiles and 37 drones launched by Russia over eight regions of Ukraine overnight and into Wednesday morning.

The large-scale bombardment comes at a critical moment on the battlefield. Russian forces are advancing in the east and concerns are growing over future aid for Ukraine after US Donald Trump’s victory in presidential elections.
