According to a statement by the force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, some of the arms were carted away by hoodlums during civil unrest.

Adejobi said the Force had to clarify that the report appears to stem from an assessment of the report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, AuGF, dating back to 2019, likely reflecting records compiled before the current Inspector-General of Police’s tenure.

He stated that it is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by the police during periods of civil unrest, during which several Police Officers were killed and their arms carted away, and some attacks and looting of police facilities and armories, resulting in the loss of arms.

Adejobi further said that every effort has been made to account for the arms taken, while many have been recovered back to the arms holding of the force at the moment.

He also noted that when auditors conduct visits to their armories, they may not find all arms present at the time due to the issuance of weapons to personnel for operational purposes, many spanning months depending on the nature of such operations, which consequently may lead to misconceptions regarding the accuracy of audit reports.

The Executive Director of MURIC, Ishaq Akintola gave the warning in a statement saying the extension could erode efficiency, breed division, and diminish public confidence in the police force.

According to him, the amendment to the Police Act that paved the way for Egbetokun’s tenure extension is a cause for concern.

The amended Section 18(8) of the Act allows the I-G to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the appointment letter, rather than retiring at 60 years.

Akintola noted that the police force had made significant strides in improving security in recent times, with hundreds of kidnap victims rescued and several high-profile crimes solved.

He feared the tenure extension could undermine this progress and create divisions within the force.

He said that the move has sparked debate, with some arguing that it is necessary to maintain continuity and stability in the police force, while others see it as a violation of the Police Act.

There have been a series of protests against the alleged extension of the IGP’s tenure.

Report has it that the case which emanated from comments made by Farotimi in an interview about his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, particularly concerning Afe Babalola, was formally withdrawn in court.

At the hearing, counsel for the complainant, Samson Osobu, informed the court that the prosecution had filed a notice of discontinuance citing Section 108(1)(2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 as the basis for the withdrawal.

He further explained that the decision to withdraw the case followed interventions by well-meaning Nigerians and a request from the nominal complainant, Afe Babalola, to discontinue the matter.

Counsel for the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, did not oppose the withdrawal.

Consequently, the Presiding Judge, Babs Kuewumi struck out the case.

While speaking to journalists after the ruling, Olumide-Fusika noted that the case had been concluded in Ado Ekiti but declined to comment on related matters pending in courts across Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti.

He also stated that he had advised Farotimi against granting press interviews on the matter.

The withdrawal of the suit follows the intervention of prominent traditional rulers, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Afe Babalola had on Monday announced that he would instruct his lawyers to withdraw the defamation charges against Farotimi.

Tensions rose when two lawmakers raised concerns that the IGP’s presentation did not align with the documents they had received.

The committee chairman’s attempt to allow the IGP to continue while the issue was resolved met strong resistance, leading to a heated shouting session.

The dispute escalated, prompting a senator to stage a walkout before order was eventually restored, and the IGP resumed his presentation, reiterating his longstanding call for the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, to be removed from the restrictive envelope budget system.

He argued that the current budgeting framework hampers the Force’s ability to effectively address national security challenges.

In response, Senator Abdul Ningi stated that envelope was never a legal entity and neither was it ratified by the National Assembly and should therefore continue as the normative.

Other lawmakers threw their weight behind the idea of reviewing the budgeting process for the police, suggesting a shift towards a more flexible and needs-based funding model.

The Ijaw leader, in a letter to the IGP, during a press briefing at his Asokoro residence, asked Egbetokun to arrest Wike over his threat to set fire in the states of governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall, that Wike, while speaking at the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Saturday during the party’s state congress, warned the PDP governors to stay clear of the party’s affairs in Rivers.

Reacting, Clark said that the words of the former Rivers State governor marked a flagrant disrespect to the person of President Bola Tinubu, who appointed him. He described Wike’s comments as a form of treason, capable of inciting violence in the country.

According to the elder statesman, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, and #EndBadGovernance protesters had been arrested for similar offences.

He insisted that the IGP must do the same with the FCT minister and get him to retract his statements.
