Nigerian Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan Announces Release Date for ‘Anikulapo’ Season 2

Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has announced the release date for the second season of his epic series ‘Anikulapo’.

In a recent Instagram post, Afolayan shared a picture of the first season of the series, revealing that the second instalment would premiere on Netflix on January 30.

“Anikulapo series season 2 coming on 30 January on @naijaonnetflix. Are you ready?” he wrote.

In July 2024, Afolayan revealed that the second season was shot in Ghana in partnership with its National Film Authority.

He also unveiled some new cast members for the series, including former BBNaija housemate Okusaga Adeoluwa, Kiekie, Antar Laniyan, Saidi Balogun, Teniola Aladese, Nico Claudio, and Oyinbo Ibile.

The mini-series, which was filmed at the Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) film village in Oyo state, was a sequel to ‘Anikulapo’, the 2022 award-winning film.

In September 2022, Afolayan released ‘Anikulapo’ as a one-part movie, starring Kunle Remi and Bimbo Ademoye as the lead cast.

‘Anikulapo’ tells the story of Saro, a young cloth weaver, who is brought back to life by a mystical bird after he was beaten to death for having an affair with Arolake, the Alaafin of Oyo’s youngest wife.

‘Rise of the Spectre’ became the film’s sequel, spinning off into a series that tells the story of Saro’s return from death. A dazed Saro receives an order from the guardians of the afterlife to complete a task he would deem impossible.

Among the actors featured in the series are Sola Sobowale, Owobo Ogunde, Jide Kosoko, Taiwo Hassan, Gabriel Afolayan, and Lateef Adedimeji.

Others are Layi Wasabi, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Ronke Oshodi-Oke, Moji Afolayan, Aisha Lawal, Uzee Usman, Adeniyi Johnson, and Funky Mallam.

Kunle Afolayan’s Film Academy Partners With Oyo Govt To Empower Young Filmmakers

The training, themed ‘Emerging Stories,’ is organised in partnership with the Oyo government and KAP Film & Television Academy to equip aspiring filmmakers with practical skills across the filmmaking process.

It will also feature mentorship from top industry veterans, including Tunde Kelani and Joke Silva.

Speaking about the training, Afolayan explained that the residency will focus more on shaping discipline and passion, not just technical skills, adding that the programme seeks to nurture new storytellers who can carry African cinema to global recognition.

‎“This residency is much more about technical skills; it’s about instilling the passion and discipline required to become a successful storyteller,” he said.

Oluseyi Makinde, Oyo governor, said the initiative shows the state’s commitment to empowering young people and building Oyo as a hub for creativity and culture.

“The programme reflects our commitment to empowering youth and positioning Oyo State as a premier hub for creativity and innovation,” he said.

“A strategic partnership with KAP Academy will significantly boost our efforts towards opening significant opportunities both for our young people and for the cultural economy of our state.”

The residency, which will be held at Afolayan’s KAP Film Village and Resort, will feature young participants drawn from all 33 local government areas of Oyo.

Ademola Ojo, Oyo commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, said the selected participants across the state have shown readiness for the programme.
