The Kano State Government has approved over ₦6.9 billion for infrastructure development, social welfare initiatives, and governance-related projects across the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, following the 36th meeting of the Kano State Executive Council, held at the Government House, Kano.

According to Waiya, the approvals cover critical sectors including road construction, drainage systems, water supply, education, entrepreneurship development, and legislative reforms, reflecting the administration’s determination to close infrastructure gaps while strengthening state institutions.

“The Kano State Executive Council has approved projects amounting to over N6.9 billion, targeting key areas that directly affect the lives of our people, particularly infrastructure, education, and good governance,” Waiya said.

A significant portion of the funds was allocated to road infrastructure and compensation for affected communities.

The council approved ₦859.2 million as compensation to property owners impacted by a five-kilometre road construction project in Tudun Wada Local Government Area.

“This compensation is aimed at ensuring fairness, minimising disruption, and allowing the road project to proceed smoothly,” the commissioner explained.

In addition, the council approved ₦2.6bn for the construction of the Yandodo–Mai-Allo Road, a major route expected to improve connectivity between several communities.

Another ₦1.2bn was approved for the construction of a box culvert, while ₦896m was earmarked for the reconstruction of a failed culvert in Kiru Local Government Area, an area frequently affected by flooding.

Urban drainage and water supply projects also featured prominently. The council approved ₦358.5m for stormwater drainage projects in Kano Municipal, alongside ₦85.6m for the extension of water pipelines in Gwale Local Government Area.

“These drainage and water projects are critical to reducing flood risks and improving access to clean, potable water for residents,” Waiya noted.

In the education sector, the council approved ₦285m for classroom construction across the state, as well as ₦ 431.7m to support graduation ceremonies and empowerment programmes at the Kano State Entrepreneurship Institute.

“Investment in education and entrepreneurship remains central to our human capital development strategy,” Waiya said.

The council also approved ₦157.7m for the organisation of an anti-corruption workshop, aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in public service.

Beyond financial approvals, the Executive Council authorised the transmission of four bills to the Kano State House of Assembly.

These include the Kano State Local Governments Administration Bill 2025, Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council Bill 2025, Kano State Education Bill 2025, and a bill seeking to rename the Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Dambatta.

The council further approved the implementation of the state’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy and Manual, a move intended to attract private sector investment into infrastructure and service delivery.

“The approval of the PPP framework signals the government’s readiness to collaborate with the private sector to accelerate development,” Waiya added.

The latest approvals build on earlier spending decisions by the state government. In previous briefings, the Executive Council approved ₦14.8bn for developmental projects, including the renovation of the Sabo Bakin Zuwo maternity hospital in Jakara, as well as investments in health facilities, solar energy systems, and water infrastructure.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the landmark deal marks a major step toward strengthening energy security and accelerating economic transformation in Northern Nigeria.

The agreement, finalized during the High-Level Electrification Summit held in Marrakech, Morocco, from October 16th to 19th, 2025, will see the three states jointly establish a regional electricity market and acquire equity stakes in Future Energies Africa (FEA) the core investor in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

Governor Yusuf, who initiated the collaborative framework, said the partnership is a strategic effort to achieve energy sufficiency, promote economic inclusion, and create a business-friendly environment that supports sustainable industrial growth in Kano and the entire region.

“Our goal is to make Kano the industrial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria once again. By investing in regional energy solutions, we are empowering businesses, creating jobs, and ensuring reliable electricity that drives prosperity across our communities, said Yusuf.

Under the partnership, the three states will establish a ₦50 billion Electrification Fund to expand access to electricity through embedded generation, grid extension, mini-grids, and solar home systems.

He frowned at the huge debts recorded on the electricity consumed, saying, “No payment has been made for electricity consumed at the residential complex in spite of its negative impact on service delivery and KEDCO’s operations.”

He recalled that the KEDCO, in a letter signed by the Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Muhammad Aminu, had notified the AKTH of its plans to withdraw electricity services from staff quarters and non-essential areas due to partial settlement of bills.

He, however, assured the public that electricity supply to health facilities, especially those offering critical and life-saving services, would remain a top priority

He also assured that KEDCO remains committed to providing uninterrupted electricity to the hospital as a foremost health institution while appealing for its cooperation on the separation exercise.

Bala further explained that electricity had since been restored to the AKTH after an ongoing process to separate the main hospital campus and health facilities from the staff quarters and residential complex.

”The main campus and health facilities are connected to top-priority 33KVA Zaria Road feeder to enjoy average of 22 hours of daily supply under Band A services.

“However, the AKTH management has continued to insist that staff quarters and residential homes remain on the same feeder as hospital, and this has continued to pose repeated risks to the stability and reliability of supply,” he said.

The head of corporate communication noted that several attempts to separate the two lines were unsuccessful due to management’s resistance and eventually resulted in a severe fault that caused the recent outage.

He added that to safeguard uninterrupted supply to the hospital, the company proceeded with the separation of the two supply lines.

This was disclosed in a statement released in Kano by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, Musbahu Lawan.

This move comes at a time when the Nigerian criminal justice system is going through challenges, particularly issues surrounding prolonged pre-trial detention and overcrowded correctional facilities.

According to Lawan, Abdu-Aboki granted the release during her official working visit to custodial facilities in the state.

Abdu-Aboki said that the release was made due to the absence of active prosecution, missing case files, and prolonged delays in their legal proceedings, adding that the action was in line with her commitment to reform.

The Chief Justice emphasized the need for a stronger collaboration among all stakeholders in the justice system, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Office of the Attorney General of Kano, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, for timely justice dispensation.

She advised the released inmates to become good ambassadors of society, desist from crime, and contribute positively to their communities.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Mr Ado Inuwa, also cautioned the freed inmates to abide by the law and refrain from any act that could return them to incarceration.

Inuwa commended the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Indidi-Nwakuche, for his commitment to inmates’ welfare and rehabilitation through skills acquisition programmes and education aimed at making them self-reliant.
