Harris, who was bidding to become the first female president, told supporters that she had spoken to Trump and congratulated him.

Trump was able to regain the White House after securing victories in the key swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, U.S. broadcasters projected earlier on Wednesday.

Also, Trump was leading both in the electoral college votes as well as the popular votes. While he had the majority of the electoral college votes in 2016, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party won a majority of the popular votes.

Harris who was endorsed by President Joe Biden became the Democratic Party nominee for the 5 November presidential election. Her candidacy was also ratified by the delegates of the party during its national convention.

The US vice-president sat down with a local ABC News station in the key swing state of Pennsylvania to discuss the economy, a political vulnerability, and gun control.

Reacting to the interview, her Republican rival, Donald Trump, said she had a very hard time answering the simplest of questions.

Harris and Trump are in a dead heat in Pennsylvania and other battleground states ahead of November’s White House election, according to opinion polls.

During Friday’s 11-minute sit-down in Johnston, Harris was asked how she would bring down prices for Americans. Inflation has been receding since it surged early in the Biden administration to a 40-year high, even as unemployment fell to historic lows.

She said she would give small-business owners a $50,000 tax deduction to start their enterprises and a $25,000 down payment for first-time homebuyers. The price-tag for the plan and who might qualify are unclear.

Political watchers suggested at the time that the muted mics rule used in that debate may have benefited Trump, as it limited his ability to interrupt Mr Biden and speak off-the-cuff, and helped him deliver a more measured performance.

The Trump campaign said in a statement it was “thrilled that Kamala Harris and her team of Biden campaign leftovers” have “accepted the already agreed-upon rules.”

Trump himself, however, previously indicated that he would accepted un-muted mics.

The debate is set to run for 90 minutes and will be held at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It will be moderated by ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis.

Both candidates will not be giving opening statements, and they are not allowed to communicate with their campaign staff during commercial breaks.

Like the CNN debate, there will be no live audience inside the venue.

The US Army said a Trump staffer abruptly pushed aside a cemetery employee who was trying to warn his team about rules against filming in the cemetery.

The Trump campaign has disputed the cemetery’s version of events and said it received permission from the families of the fallen soldiers to film.

The incident happened, when Trump was at an event honouring 13 US military service members who were killed during the country’s withdrawal from Afghanistan three years ago.

In deeply personal remarks shifting the focus onto Harris’s qualities, her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, told the convention “she is ready.”

With the party united and Harris polling strongly, Democrats are making clear they believe they can defeat Trump.

The Republican nominee had seemed set to regain power in November’s election until Biden upended the race by dropping out and endorsing his vice president.

The Minnesota governor spoke in front of thousands of supporters just hours after he was announced as  Harris’s pick for the role.

At the rally in the key swing state of Pennsylvania, Harris, currently the US vice-president, said she and Mr Walz were the underdogs in what is expected to be a close election but had the momentum.

She introduced her running mate as a fighter for the middle class, a patriot.

Walz then recounted his small-town roots in Nebraska and his career as a national guardsman and teacher, before attempting to draw a contrast with Trump.

He got some of the loudest cheers of the night when he took aim at the former president’s criminal record, with chants of  lock him up from those in the arena.

Kamala Harris’s campaign has swung into action since she replaced Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, smashing fundraising records and wiping out the leads built up by Republican rival Donald Trump.

According to a US senator and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democratic rising star, is said to have been considered the favorite to join Harris as her vice-presidential pick, ahead of several other state governors.

It was reported  that Harris had narrowed one of the most consequential choices of her political career to Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and would likely make her decision public in a video announcement.

The 59-year-old and her newly minted deputy will hold a rally at Temple University in Philadelphia before hitting Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, Arizona on Friday and Nevada on Saturday.

She was also intending to hold events in battlegrounds North Carolina on Thursday and Georgia on Friday, but local media outlets reported that a tropical storm battering southeastern states had forced their postponement.

Less than two weeks after Joe Biden ended his reelection bid, his 52-year-old vice president is in full control of the party, having emerged as the only Democrat in the running to challenge Republican Donald Trump in November.

Just under 4,000 delegates, the grassroots activists and politicians allocated during the primary process, sent in signatures backing Harris to be on the ballot for the five-day electronic vote.

No other Democrats have stepped forward to challenge her elevation to the top of the ticket, making her confirmation as the first Black and South Asian woman ever to secure a major party’s nomination a formality.

She won the support of 99 percent of the delegates who signed petitions, the Democratic National Committee ,DNC, said in a statement, while no one else met the qualifying threshold of 300 signatures.

The announcement could come late , as she hits the campaign trail for a swing across seven crucial battleground states with her newly minted running mate, who has not yet been announced.

US media reported that she would kick off the tour in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, although the DNC did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

The 2024 nominating system is largely as it was in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic prevented a large in-person convention, but it is still unusual.

The DNC swapped to a virtual process because of Ohio’s deadline — Wednesday next week — for major parties to submit the names of their certified candidates for the November election.

Much remains unclear about the announcement of the results, however.

The DNC has not revealed if the vote will be livestreamed or if a rolling tally will be available to the public, and has not disclosed whether it would make the results public before the end of the voting period if they were available.
