Governor of Kaduna, Uba Sani has approved improved welfare packages for teachers in the state, including the extension of their retirement age to 65 years.

This was contained in sa statement issued by the state’s commissioner for information, Ahmed Maiyaki noting that the new measures took effect from August 1, 2025.

He stated that the policy extended the mandatory retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and increased the maximum years of service from 35 to 40 years.
Maiyaki said teachers deployed to rural and hard-to-reach communities would also receive a special rural allowance as part of efforts to address staffing gaps and improve learning outcomes in underserved areas.

He said the decision reflected the governor’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening the education sector in the state.
“This policy is designed to honour years of dedicated service, retain invaluable experience in our classrooms, and motivate greater productivity for the benefit of our children and the future of Kaduna state,” Maiyaki said.

“The approval aligns with the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022, which allows teachers to serve beyond the general public service retirement age of 60 years or 35 years of service in recognition of their role in national development.

“A circular conveying the approval has been issued by the office of the governor and signed by Felicia Makama, permanent secretary (establishment), directing all relevant institutions to comply.
“The circular added that detailed implementation guidelines would be issued by the state civil service commission in due course.”

Maiyaki said the governor expressed confidence that the policy would boost teacher motivation, improve retention, and raise educational standards across Kaduna state.

The incident occurred at Tower Number 7 along the Kaduna Town Lines One and Two, located in the Rigasa area of Igabi Local Government Area. According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, the collapse followed a severe windstorm and heavy rainfall, but was worsened by vandalism. Critical structural components of the tower had been removed by unknown individuals, making it vulnerable to failure.

As a result, power supply to multiple distribution load centres serving parts of Kaduna South was disrupted, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without electricity.

“The tower collapse caused a cut in the transmission of bulk power to some Kaduna Electric distribution load centres, particularly those supplying Kaduna South,” Mbah said in a statement.

During a site inspection, TCN engineers discovered that vandals had stripped vital metal components from the tower, contributing to its collapse.

To mitigate the impact of the outage, TCN has directed Kaduna Electric to connect its 33kV Mogadishu feeder to the 33kV Abakwa feeder. This temporary measure is expected to restore electricity to parts of the Mogadishu area.

Meanwhile, TCN confirmed that other parts of Kaduna metropolis, including Kinkinau, Yan Tukwane, Kabala West, Unguwan Muazu, and Kaduna North remain unaffected.

This piece of news was disclosed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kaduna State Council, during a press briefing where the union confirmed that the process had officially commenced but insisted that full implementation for all workers must follow promptly.

The state NLC Chairman, Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, in a chat with journalists, explained that while the development was a positive step, there were still gaps that needed to be addressed, especially at the local government level and within certain sectors.

“We welcome the commencement of the ₦72,000 minimum wage implementation for civil servants in Kaduna State. The government has started with Grade Levels 1–6, but we want to make it clear that this is only the first phase. We expect the implementation to cover all categories of workers, including teachers, healthcare workers, and employees in tertiary institutions and parastatals,” Suleiman said.

According to Suleiman, the state government tied the extension of the new wage structure to other categories of workers to the ongoing staff and pension verification exercise.

“We have been informed that the adjustments for other workers, including pensioners, will only come after the staff and pension verification exercise. While we understand the need for proper documentation, we want the government to fast-track the process so that no category of worker is left behind,” he added.

He said the NLC had taken note of the government’s commitment to adopt new salary tables for CONMESS (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) and CONHESS (Consolidated Health Salary Structure) for health workers in line with the new minimum wage.

“This is a welcome development. Health workers deserve better pay given the critical services they render, and we expect the new salary tables to reflect the ₦72,000 minimum wage framework,” he said.

Despite the progress, the labour leader lamented that primary school teachers, local government employees, and primary healthcare workers had not yet benefited from the wage adjustment.

He stressed that the Congress would hold the government accountable for its promises, adding that workers had endured years of stagnated wages amid rising costs of living.

The NLC leader revealed that engagements between the union and the state government were ongoing to ensure the concerns of affected workers were resolved.

He also urged the government to prioritise fairness and transparency in the process, noting that industrial harmony depended on prompt action.

He called on the government to speed up the verification exercise so that the full wage implementation could be completed before the September 2025 deadline.

The state government, through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Suleiman Shuaibu, condemned El-Rufai’s comments in a statement, noting that are the comments not mere words, but are ‘calculated, malicious lies designed to undermine security efforts, incite public anger, and legitimise criminality.’

The statement also said that the recent actions of the former governor amounted to a direct threat to peace and development, and accused him of plotting to destabilise the state through “provocation, manipulation and incitement,” warning that it would not tolerate attempts to drag the state back into violence.

“This Government will not fold its arms and allow a discredited former leader, who left the state in ruins, to ignite chaos and plunge the state into another era of ethno-religious tension, insecurity, and economic stagnation,” the Commissioner said.

The government also accused El-Rufa’i of convening “an illegal and chaotic meeting” on his political associates, which degenerated into violence, including gunshots that endangered innocent citizens.

The Commissioner also noted that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) had already dismissed the allegations made by El-Rufai, insisting that neither the Federal Government nor any agency under it had ever paid bandits.

The statement also listed achievements in education, healthcare and infrastructure, claiming that Kaduna now ranks 7th nationally in WAEC results, with millions of citizens integrated into the financial system and healthcare facilities upgraded across the 23 local government areas.

The commissioner warned El-Rufai to desist from acts that could threaten stability, stressing that security agencies had been placed on alert.

He urged residents not to fall for “the provocations of a failed leader trying to stay relevant by plunging the state into anarchy

The suspect, identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was caught around 3:30 a.m. in an hotel along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis. He was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS.

According to the Kaduna State Police Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the ₦25,963,000 recovered from the suspect was meant to induce voters and compromise the electoral process.

Police spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect had confessed to the crime and pleaded for leniency.

According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, Hassan stated, “The suspect was arrested with the said amount, believed to have been earmarked for bribing voters. He confessed to the crime and begged for mercy. We wish to reiterate that anyone found attempting to undermine the electoral process will face the full wrath of the law.”

The Commissioner also issued a stern warning that the command would not spare anyone involved in vote buying, thuggery, violence, or any illegal activity aimed at disrupting the polls.

The Police Command disclosed that it had received credible intelligence about plans by some politicians to instigate unrest. Security agencies have therefore deployed personnel to polling units, collation centres, and other flashpoints across the state.

In a statement, the police also assured residents of adequate security before, during, and after the elections, urging citizens to come out and exercise their civic rights peacefully.

Dangote also stated that the refineries, which are under the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, had gulped up to $18bn, yet have refused to work.

The billionaire businessman spoke while hosting members of the Global CEO Africa from the Lagos Business School, after a tour of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos.

According to Dangote, the 650,000-capacity Dangote refinery, which he built after the government of late President Umar Yar’adua aborted his acquisition of the government refineries now has over 50 per cent of its output dedicated to Premium Motor Spirit, petrol, saying that even government refineries committed just 22 per cent of their production to petrol.

Dangote recalled how he and his team had to return the refineries to Yar’adua, a few months after former President Olusegun Obasanjo left office in 2007.

According to him, the former managers of the refinery had told Yar’Adua that Obasanjo sold the facilities below their costs as a parting gift to him.

Dangote emphasised that the turnaround maintenance of the refineries was like trying to modernise a car built 40 years ago, when technology has advanced.

“The turnaround maintenance is like you trying to modernise a car that was built 40 years ago, when technology and everything have changed. Even if you change the engine, the body will not be able to take the shock of that new technology engine,” he stated.
